The season finale finds Nick and Peter more divided than ever before. They will learn their success literally comes from their partnership.
It does not seem to Jess that Pete and Nick can't agree on anything, when it comes to planning Las Vegas Legal Fund, which they are hosting together.
Shall it be classic ivory or hip maroon?
Asian fusion or Italian?
Hor d'oeuvres or buffet?
Nick again corrects Pete that he and Jess are separated, not divorced.
They do agree on one thing. The music act they want is Frank Sinatra Jr.
Before long, Nick gets a call from his friend Blake Donovan and Peter gets one from the man's wife Carly. Russell Copley, their yoga studio's master yoga teacher has been found dead.
Blake's phone message threatening Russell and oneway plane tickets to India give police enough reason to arrest them both for murder.
They tell Nick and Peter the phone call was over a business dispute.
Kurt Faber the yoga studio manager, who found the body, believed Blake and Carly did it. Later Tony finds out that Kurt lost his life savings due to Russell backing out of a business proposition.
The state objects to the partners representing both defendants due to a conflict of interest considering Russell and Carly were having an affair. They can only defend either Blake or Carly, not both. Nick wants to represent Blake. Pete wants to represent Carly. Maybe they can do both. Nick suggests they break up the partnership to take them both. “It's only paperwork, let's just tear it up for a little while.”
On one condition, the dissolution of the partnership must be in practice as well. They are not allowed to share offices, assistants, resources. They must build their own defenses. “Morelli & Kaczmarek is no more,” Nick assures Judge Owens.
They go about dividing the firm and flipping a coin for the office. Nick takes Lisa. Lisa gets Pete's office. Pete ends up with Zoey and crumby new office space. Seeing new receptionist Honey Bean (the slut) at her old job so soon after the split, doesn't go over well with Zoey.
While Nick waits to go back to the crime scene agian, he finds out about a confrontation between Carly and Amanda, waitress at the vegan restaurant next door.
The ADAs found a red wig, worn by the possible killer. in the the pipes of the business. Whichever one of their clients to come forward first will be offered immunity. No one wants to deal.
At trial, the state makes a good case against them. Kurt has an alibi. Pete makes his case on Blake being angry when he learned about Carly's extramarital affair. Nick makes his case on Carly attacking some waitress when she found out about Russell cheating on her with this person.
The separate defense divided the Donovans. Blake and Carly separately admit to lying about their alibi about being together the morning of the murder. They both want to take the deal now.
The separate defense also divided the former partners. Pete is the first to realize that they let a case get between them. They show a little affection before regrouping and tackling their cases together.
Back at his new office, it's Pete who saw the connection in the pipes. The yoga studio and the vegan restaurant shared the same pipe. That gives them other possible suspects. Nick zeros in on a fact. Carly caught Russell cheating when she found leather “do-me” boots. Amanda's vegan and doesn't wear leather. So everyone comes to the same conclusion. Russell was cheating on the waitress with yet another woman. They now have motive, opportunity, and access.
Together Pete and Nick tell ADA Cole that Amanda purchased a wig and a gun the day before she killed Russell and demand to have the case against their clients dismissed.
