Supernatural - Jared Padalecki to Dub First Anime Season

10 Feb 2011

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are getting animated. The "Supernatural" anime series, set for initial release in Japan on Feb. 23, is being dubbed for English-speaking audiences, and a U.S. version is expected to be released on DVD, though no release date has been announced.

In the English language version, Warner Bros. Japan confirms that Padalecki has signed on to dub all 22 episodes as Sam Winchester. Dean, however, may sound a little different - Ackles has signed on to voice only 2 of the episodes. He'll be heard on the final episodes... presumably in which Dean trades his soul for Sam's life. There's no word yet on who will fill in for the other 20 episodes, but we hope he's ready to get his growl on.

In the Japanese version, Sam and Dean Winchester will be voiced by Yuya Uchida and Hiroki Touchi, respectively. They're also the voice-actors who dub over the live action version in Japanese markets. (There are videos of their work available online. Bon Jovi and all.)

The first 22-episode season of the animation will highlight some key plot points from Season 1 and 2 of the live-action version, but will also feature new story lines and, of course, new villains. Ackles and Padalecki did get to approve their anime likenesses -- other characters, like Bobby, John, and Jessica, will be redesigned. We can also expect the ghosts, demons, and other creepy-crawlies to have a new look... without the boundaries of live-action TV, the animators have the opportunity to take it up a notch.

  1. i think it is pretty great of them to do anything with the anime, with all the work of the actual show(actually i am still really grateful they still continue that and that s really all i care about). not a fan of anime anyways, but with their schedule it is surprisng to me the original actors actually take their time to dub a japanese anime that is just redoing old live episodes.some animes don t even get an english dub at all

  2. This is going to be great!!! I'm so glad we're going to get an English version! I'm glad that we'll get to hear Jared for the series, and that Jensen will be doing some of it... Maybe we'll get lucky, and Jensen will be able to do more episodes :-) I can't wait to see the new episodes!

  7. It's just the Japanese release. Maybe they will get Jensen for the US release which will be much cheaper too.

  12. Awesome to hear that I will be able to understand it when I buy it. However, I'm a little surprised about Jensen as he has been doing so much voice work. You would think this was a given.

  15. I know. I read the article but it's just the english language version on the Japanese dvd. Don't you think it's strange that Warner Bros. Japan confirms this and not Warner Bros US which would be responsible for the US release? If they gonna release the anime here, they need somebody to dub Dean for all 22 episodes and just 20 or 2.
