Game of Thrones producer David Benioff has admitted that the eight-part series will be grim in tone.
In an interview for Sky Atlantic, he admitted that the show's propensity for killing off its central characters is reminscent of past HBO series such as The Wire and The Sopranos.
"Everyone's in jeopardy [and] it's possible that anyone's going to die at any given time," he explained. "None of the characters are safe and that's something that has always been a hallmark of the great HBO shows."
He added: "The willingness to execute anyone at any given time... keeps you at the edge of your seat."
Benioff also suggested that the fantasy drama is essentially "a story of power".
"It's a story of people who are trying to gain power, the people who have power trying to keep it, and those caught in the middle, who are caught in the crossfire," he said.
Series star Sean Bean (Ned Stark) previously claimed that Game of Thrones contains "messy" and "awful" violence.
