-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a clean Tuesday overnight sweep for CBS, with its combination of blockbuster NCIS (13.3 rating/21 share), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (11.5/17) and older-skewing The Good Wife (8.6/14). Comparably, CBS more than doubled the overnight average of second-place NBC (+-131 percent). Third overall was ABC, followed by Fox and The CW, which featured the series-finale of critically acclaimed, but minimally seen Life Unexpected.
Life Unexpected exited with a mere (and very last-place) 1.1/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. An 8 p.m. edition of the drama also scored a 1.1/ 2. To the viewers angry that The CW has cut it loose, keep in mind that it did grant it a second season. Freshman drama Hellcats moves into the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour (out of One Tree Hill) next week.
Over at NBC, another two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser: Couples (which is really one hour too long) averaged a 5.4/ 8 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
The Biggest Loser (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 5.2/ 8 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 5.1/ 8 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 5.5/ 8 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 5.7/ 9 (#2)
As always, keep in mind that the strength of The Biggest Loser falls within the young adult demos. At 10 p.m., NBC’s Parenthood, which will remain in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour until further notice (see TV Tidbits below), finished last with a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights. Although that should be enough to beat a Tuesday edition of ABC’s competing 20/20 (#2: 4.4/ 7) among adults 18-49, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of The Biggest Loser lacked at 67 percent.
ABC, no doubt, is counting the days until the return of Dancing with the Stars given its uneventful Tuesday performance. Freshman drama No Ordinary Family finished third at 8 p.m., with a 3.9/ 6 in the overnights, followed by surprise returnee V (#3: 4.1/ 6) and the aforementioned Tuesday 10 p.m. edition of 20/20 (#2: 4.4/ 7), which was a last-minute replacement for expected-to-be axed Detroit 1-8-7. Although V is expected to build among adults 18-49 out of No Ordinary Family, ABC needs a stronger anchor to ignite the entire evening.
Fox filled the evening with a repeat of Glee (#4: 3.3/ 5), which showcased why Chris Colfer just snagged a Golden Globe Award, and recent game show entry Million Dollar Money Drop (#4: 3.4/ 5). Keep in mind that Raising Hope returns to the 9 p.m. half-hour on Feb. 8 into new sitcom Traffic Light at 9:30 p.m.
