Today's Question comes from Isaac who asks.
"What is your favorite season finale plot that rejuvenates interest in a show?"
Season Finales are basically the ending of a season long run and the introduction for the next season (if the shows are lucky enough to get another season). We all love May sweeps and dread the long summer in order to see what is next for our beloved characters in the preceding fall. What makes you come back after a 4-5 month hiatus to the show? In years past countless shows use tactics such as cliff-hangers to keep talking all summer. What is your favorite way of ending a season? What gives you the push to wait all summer to come back in the fall so that you are still interested? I for one, as a TV lover, both loves and hates cliff-hanger endings. Love it because they are often dramatic and attention-grabbing, but hates them cause it takes 4-5 months to see the results of the fall out (if one doesn't pay attention to spolier sites like this.
So what kind of finale do you love?
One that raises more questions than answers? A death of a favorable character? A death of a not so favorable character? Pregnancy scare? Giving birth to a child? A time jump? A new romance blossoming? A character 'revealing all' about a certain aspect of his/her lives so that it makes the season of questions bring answers? A rival from the past coming back? New characters? Seeing characters come full circle from the first episode of the season? "
For me personally my ideal Season Finale, answers some questions, but leaves a whole lot more questions, that will have me thinking about the show until it's return. One of my favourite shows, Lost, was great at this. I'll give you some examples.
- Season 1 - What's in the Hatch? (Is this one of the greatest cliffhangers ever? It ensured that 23 Million people watched the Season 2 Premiere to find out)
- Season 2 - Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley are captured.
- Season 3 - WTF! They got off the island! It was a Flashforward!
- Season 4 - Where the f**k did the island go???????
- Season 5 - Did the bomb go off causing the Incident?
They were all jawdroppers to me and loved every moment. I spent the months between seasons obsessing over the answers and trawled all the Lost forums and sites especially DarkUFO.
So what about you? What have been your favourite Season Finale Plots and Episodes and which types do you like best?
