Question of the Day - At what point do you decide to stop watching a show?

Today's Question of the Day comes from Linlighthouse who asks.

"At what point do you decide to stop watching a show?"

It might be that the show has ""jumped the shark"" by introducing too many gimmicks: the cast travels to Italy for some reason, or big-name guest stars keep popping up. Or maybe the in-house bed-hopping has finally become just too, too much for you. Maybe the cast has grown too long in the tooth and the cuteness factor has diminished now that the adorable little kids are have begun shaving/wearing bras. And then they make it worse by getting rid of one kid and bringing in a cousin or orphan or something (Cosby Show).

Or maybe you stop watching a show simply because your own life has changed along with your interests.

I used to be hooked on reality advice shows, but came to a point when I felt I no longer needed to be told how to cook/dress myself/decorate. And reality amateur contests (American Idol, for example) became just too amateur for me.

But one of the biggest show enders for me is when an actor unexpectedly leaves and the show recovers poorly. George Clooney's departure from ER left the writers sending Doug Ross across the country while Carol Hathaway was pregnant with his twins. Bummer. On the other hand, I was fine with Jimmy Smits replacing David Caruso on NYPD Blue, but when Smits left, so did I.

So, other than cancellation, when was a show over for you?
"

Great question.

I can't remember too many shows that I gave up on. The most recent was Heroes which literally seemed to lose the plot. I loved the first season but then things started to go wrong, very wrong. I think I gave up at the start of Season 3.

I try to give all new shows a go and if they grab me then I carry on. I'm looking for great stories and characters along with good acting. If a new show hits all 3 them I'm pretty much hooked.

So what about you? Which shows have you given up on, why and when?
