________
-Ratings Breakdown:
Dominant CBS stood well above second-place NBC, with a 62 percent overnight advantage. Third overall was ABC, which is certainly not benefiting while Dancing with the Stars is on hiatus, followed by Fox and The CW.
CBS’ How I Met Your Mother was the 8 p.m. standout, with a season-high (and first-place) 6.8 rating/10 share in the overnights. That set the stage for a clean sweep for the Eye net care of Rules of Engagement (6.2/ 9), Two and a Half Men (9.6/14), Mike & Molly (7.9/11) and Hawaii Five-O (7.6/12) from 8:30-11 p.m. Retention for Mike & Molly out of Two and a Half Men this week was a respectable 82 percent. While Mike & Molly and Hawaii Five-O are not as strong as year-ago occupants The Big Bang Theory and CSI: Miami, finishing first is still worthy of being labeled a “winner.”
Over at NBC, holiday music competition The Sing-Off scored a decent 5.8/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
The Sing-Off (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 5.9/ 9 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 5.9/ 9 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 5.8/ 8 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 5.6/ 8 (#2)
Comparably, this was equal to one week earlier, which translated into 8.57 million viewers and a 2.8/ 7 in the demo, based on the live plus same day ratings.
Despite the improved lead-in support, a repeat of NBC’s Chase at 10 p.m. was not discovered by any new viewers with a mere (and last-place) 2.4/ 4 in the overnights. As a reminder, Chase will move to Wednesday at 9 p.m. beginning on Jan. 12 into Law & Order: SVU, which shifts back one hour. Unfortunately, there is no reason to believe the move will prove beneficial.
Elsewhere, a one-hour edition of ABC’s Skating with the Stars remained a complete bust, with a fourth-place 3.0/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m. That led into holiday special, Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You, at an uneventful (and third-place) 3.7/ 6 at 9 p.m., followed by a repeat of Castle at a second-place 3.9/ 6 at 10 p.m. Mirroring earlier this month, holiday musical specials do not seem to have any ratings pull this season.
Fox populated the evening with repeats of House (#3: 3.1/ 5) and Lie to Me (#4: 2.3/ 4), which was not picked-up for the remainder of the season. And The CW aired back-to-back repeats of The Vampire Diaries (#5: avg. 0.9/ 1 from 8-10 p.m.), which is scheduled in the two-hour block all week.
