Do Love Triangles/Romantic Elements spoil a good show

This is a great question and one that really bugs me. One of my favourite shows is Lost but the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer thing really got on my nerves at times and split the fandom. Lots of time was wasted with these pointless storylines when they could have been developing the story more. It's the only part of Lost that I did not really care for.

Other shows that in my opinion have suffered over the years are House and Bones. House especially is turning into some soap opera. I loved the early seasons of House, the medical problems, his cutting wit but as the seasons went on they started pushing his relationship with Cuddy on us. Maybe I'm alone but seeing at how the viewing figures are dropping I don't think I am.

And as for Bones, we'll don't get me started.

What about you? Do you feel that sometimes the shows romantic element takes away from the main storyline/character that made you fall in love with a show?
