Having just watched Episode 1.08 Blue Dots, it has proven to me how funny this show really is. Lou Wagner as the Chance family's new lawyer Wally Phipps was great casting. I remembered him from CHiPs, but he's also famous for playing a Ferengi in Star Trek The Next Generation and an ape in Planet of the Apes.
Here is my recap of the episodes I have watched so far.
1.01 Pilot
Jimmy Chance (Lucas Neff) lives at home with his carefree parents, Burt (Garrett Dillahunt) and Virginia (Martha Plimpton), Jimmy's great grandmother Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman). He didn't know he got a girl pregnant and that girl ended up on death row. One day, he brings his daughter home from prison. Contrary to his parents' expectations, Jimmy decides to raise her himself. - 10/10
1.02 Dead Tooth
Jimmy can't take Hope to work anymore, so she takes her to a daycare center for kids, dogs, and seniors, run by Sabrina's cousin Shelley. They went out once and he's grateful that she can make his baby laugh, but can't get pass her dead tooth. Who he really likes is Sabrina, but she has a boyfriend. The funniest moment happened at the end, where Hope laughed at Jimmy just for showing her his teeth that had food stuck on it, making it look like Shelley's dead tooth. - 10/10
1.03 Dream Hoarder
Hope has learned to crawl. Jimmy gets angry at his parents for obsessing over their dreams and not watching her carefully, letting her crawl right into Virginia's greenhouse full of her things. They can't go in after her without the junk collapsing. Luckily, Maw Maw is great at the game of Jenga. When she hears her music, she knows which object to remove to make it safe to go and get her. Jimmy learns from frequent visits to Sabrina at the grocery store that it's OK to have a dream to pursue and makes up with his parents. - 10/10
1.05 Fanily Secret
Jimmy suspects Virginia is keeping a family secret. Jimmy guesses it has to do with his grandmother. Even Maw Maw in her moment of clarity warns Jimmy to back off of Virginia. Jimmy and Sabrina find out that Virginia was abandoned by her mother. Meanwhile, Jimmy brought home videos, Hope's mother Lucy made for her in prision. Jimmy wants to keep them for hope despite Virginia's misgivings. So he edit the video to only show how much Lucy loved her daughter. - 9/10
The Chance family celebrates Halloween in different ways. Virginia takes Maw Maw out to trick or treat. To make up for the lack of treats, they toilet paper a policeman's tree. Jimmy is afraid to take Hope out, because he's been scared by a masked man since he was a kid. The masked man turned out to be Burt who wanted to get a little affection from his son. Jimmy also goes to a party with Sabrina, to be her Batman for her Robin. She gets so drunk, she still doesn't know how much he likes her. - 10/10
1.07 The Sniffles
When Hope gets a cold, Jimmy realizes that he can't get her a pediatrician, without insurance. The only way to get is is by getting a job at the grocery store. He takes a job behind Burt's back, who doesn't want to seem like he can't support his family. - 10/10
1.08 Blue Dots
When Hope comes from Shelley's daycare barking, (Great use of computer animation.) Jimmy is intent on finding a real school for her, so she can be with other kids. But his application is sure to be rejected when the school finds out that there is a sex offender living in his house. Burt was caught with Virginial when she was 15 and he was 17. They hired a lawyer to lift the mark, but Maw Maw and Virginia were arrested for indecent exposure and Jimmy soon after for propositioning a hooker. Having lied on his application, he then admits he wasn't being honest. In the end, he made happened what he wanted in the first place. The other parents ended up bringing their kids to Shelley's daycare for Hope to be around. - 10/10
