I've had choices
Since the day that I was born
There were voices
That told me right from wrong
If I had listened
No I wouldn't be here today
Living and dying
With the choices I made
I was tempted
By an early age I found
I liked drinkin'
Oh, and I never turned it down
There were loved ones
But I turned them all away
Now I'm living and dying
With the choices I made
(Repeat Chorus)
I guess I'm payin'
For the things that I have done
If I could go back
Oh, Lord knows I'd run
But I'm still losin'
This game of life I play
Living and dying
With the choices I made
(Repeat Chorus)
Living and dying
With the choices I made
The words of George Jones ring so very true, over and over again during this weeks episode. Here we go!
The Devil is in the Details
Influence - yeah, that's the ticket!
The seduction of Raymond Jarvis serves as a morality tale. Dempsey plays to Jarvis' vanity in that he tells him that only he can can reach across party lines and much join the winning presidential ticket. Interesting that Dempsey knew that Martinez was going to win, "it's a done deal" he said. How did he know that? Does he have knowledge of the future or is he just a front for a vast conspiracy commonly referred to as The New World Order? More on that another time. Finally, Dempsey refers to Jarvis bringing balance to the ticket. Jarvis seems to be going thru the same redemption cycle as Anakin Skywalker while braining balance to the Force.
Another thought that occurred to me is Dempsey is using Jedi mind tricks.
Despite the perception that Dempsey wants people to think he is this all powerful man behind the curtain. I can't help but think of his limitations
Why did his people not verify Vickey had completed her rookie mission as ordered? Yet the cover up of multiple federal agents is possible. Are they really dead? Is this happening?
Let's pause and reflect back on Jarvis' speech: we will make you beLIEve!
Fun Facts:
The call to go forward with the assassination attempt was made at 1:08 PM; this was episode 1.08.
The doctor's license given to the pharmacist is B63477. On a whim I googled that and one of the hits was related to genetics.
The cost of the items from the pharmacy is $167.68. The Dewey Decimal Classification system tells us this: the 100's are for philosophy and psychology. The 160s subset is for logic and 167 is for hypothesis.
Dempsey is using a "herbal sweetener." Yeah, right. There is an herbal sweetener called Stevia. It is an herb in the Chrysanthemum family which grows wild as a small shrub in parts of Paraguay and Brazil. Brazilian Separatists where blamed for the biological attack on the passengers of Avias 514. Avias, avian, bird, bird flu anyone?
Chrysanthemum, huh, so what you day? We already met a friend of his, the orchid. Soon, promise. The mum is symbolic in several different ways: white mums in some countries represent death and only used at funerals. In China and Japan it can represent nobility. In Australia, guess what they give for Mother's Day?
The orchid, chrysanthemum, plum blossom and bamboo are members of a group called the Four Gentlemen and are used to represent the unfolding of the four seasons. Much as we are watching the unfolding of events.
mirror mirror
I don't know about you but the sequence of Dempsey looking in the mirror was awesome! My first reaction was wow, it's Dorian Grey! However, upon several rewatches my take is that the medicine he was taking was for restoring youth, not hiding youth. What do you think; medicine made him appear older or appear younger? The argument for making him look older was to hide that he is one of the "sleepers" and he is using the same technology that is used to cause his $2 million dollar orchid bloom more often.
However, and I am not sure who to attribute this to since I read a lot, best thought to me is he is using medicine to appear younger. A great theory is that he was a soldier charged with guarding Sophia's people back in the early days of their capture. Observing the situation he realized there was potential. Once out of the Army he focused on making fortune to try to learn their secrets. Thoughts?
The use of the mirror was interesting also in the fact that mirrors have been said to reflect the soul. What kind of soul did you see Dempsey has lurking? It did not appear to be benevolent. Another idea is that the mirror cannot lie and not show something that is not there, like Dempsey's youth. Last and certainly not least, let's not forget about Through the Looking Glass.
Mission Improbable
Sean Walker, Texas Ranger strikes again! Survives a shot, beats down his shooter, flees car while bleeding out and survives back alley surgery. Wow. Anything this guy can't do? Also, did the doctor have a hard time finding his veins? hmmmm...
Sterling and Martinez continue their bromance by bonding over "family" betrayal. Blake is clearly not used to the idea of friendship since he missed that the President was calling him a good friend. I like the President but I hope he isn't something along the lines of The Manchurian Candidate. Is he a sleeper and why he wants to release the prisoners? Is his reporter friend he pre-briefed about the immenant release the crazy conspiracy lady? Why doesn't he run the country rather than personally interrogate prisoners? Why wasn't the time of the call to go ahead with the plane attack known prior to the president asking?
Speaking of family betrayal, the fact that Vickey disobeyed orders (again!) from Dempsey must have felt like a family betrayal to him. The shot of Jarvis walking the corridor brought to mind a prisoner walking the green mile.
Well friends and neighbors, we are nearing the end of the first half run of The Event. Fortunately the ratings were up for this last episode. Keep it up! Tell your friends, tell your tweeps, tell people on the street. There is a planned hiatus from episode 1.10 until Feb. 28. I plan to continue posting food for thought during that time.
Until next week! I look forward to your comments/questions/discussion. You can find me on Twitter @iowa_card. Fear not for spam should you choose to follow me. I only like my spam with eggs.
