Dexter - Episode 5.06 - Everything is Illumenated - Recap

In 'Everything is Illumenated', Lumen shot one of the men she believed was part of her attack. Not knowing what to do, she called Dexter for help and he went straight to the scene of the crime with an unconscious man in the boot. When Dexter reaches Lumen, the man she shot is still alive. Dexter is not convinced that he is guilty but Lumen is convinced. Debra and Vince are already on their way so Dexter must make a quick decision. After Lumen tortures the man he admits to being part of her attack and Dexter kills him in a second.

The man in the boot of Dexter's car manages to escape and is running straight into the path of Debra and Vince. Dexter isn't far behind and manages to catch him and get him out of sight before they see him in action. By the time Debra and Vince find the man who has been shot, Dexter has managed to set up a perfect crime scene involving the man he was about to kill.

During the episode, we also see Harrison say his first words (that baby is the cutest baby on TV), Quinn grow even more suspicious of Dexter and Angel and Maria grow even closer.

For me, this was one of the stronger episodes of the season which has so far lacked in suspense and action. The episode kept us on the edge of the seats during the scene where Vince and Debra were getting closer and closer to Dexter, Lumen and the two men they had captured between them. I did think that maybe they would catch Dexter, and he would have to think of some quick excuse. Instead, he managed to create a crime scene in the space of seconds.

I do miss Dexter and his kills. We have only seen Dexter kill two people this season in his usual way. For me, this season has a totally new direction compared to other seasons and I am very much still sitting on the fence. Don't get me wrong, I do love the show still. I just feel a bit like we have lost what the show is originally about: Dexter and his need to kill. Instead, we just seem to be seeing him covering up Lumen's mess.

I hope in the next few episodes we go deeper into Quinn and his quest to find the truth about Dexter. That storyline has the potential for us to be hiding behind cushions but it's not really going anywhere at the minute and hasn't really progressed very much since episode one. I assume the writers are planning something epic for the finale few episodes.

Overall, 'Everything is Illumenated' was a great episode. I loved seeing how much Rita's death is affecting Dexter especially at the end when in the bathroom with Lumen. At the end, he promises to help Lumen find the other men who attacked her. I am very excited to see how the next few episodes progress as at the minute, I don't really have a clue what is going to happen which makes it very exciting!
