This week, Nick almost let youth culture and technology get the better of him.
Gunshots ring out at Club Duel leaving two people dead.
Music manager Bounce goes to the gym to ask Nick to help protect his business interest, rapper Killa Diz.
Diz told Nick and Pete that he already told police that he had left the club before the shooting, but he had no alibis. Having heard his latest lyrics, police have reason to believe that Killa Diz was the shooter and arrested him on the spot.
Pete takes on a new client through The Defenders website. He claims to be Quinn O’Hallohan and calls himself a cyber samurai, arrested for hacking casino computers. But on paper, he was Simon Towers, charged with 11 counts of racketeering. The problem is he can’t prove his identity. Only his girlfriend Alexis can vouch for him now. He needs help looking for her.
It’s a tough case for Pete to defend, when he can’t confirm who his client is. But
Zoey thinks it's romantic. Life of computer crime, with only each other to keep company. They are like cyber Bonnie and Clyde. (Zoey is not aware that the real Bonnie and Clyde were shot and killed by police.)
Nick wants to focus on a strategy that downplays the violence of the rap culture. All Bounce is concerned with is the Killa Diz image as a rapper. Nick appreciates that it's a marketing ploy. He’s prepared to argue that it doesn’t matter what Darryl 'Killa Diz' Hamilton sings in a song. It’s a song and it’s not admissible as criminal evidence. The ADA disagrees.
Given the lyrics sites specifics of the crime and the fact that Killa Diz sang them when policemen were present, would seem like he was speaking to them. The prosecution also want the song admitted as a confession. The court is allowing the song into trial base on evidence from a bad cellphone video. All of which is looking very incriminating for Diz.
Quinn hacked into the court’s computer system and fake posted his bail to get out of jail. Pete is devastated. This is bad. Nick is upset too.
“Look what your GOOGLE TECHNO KUNG-FU GACK ASS brought us.”
“Tell the matrix that he’s has to jump back into his computer and get his ass back to that chain gang before somebody notices.”
Lisa makes good point. “How is anyone not going to notice?” The court is look at this case with extreme prejudice. So much for beating this case.
More bad news was still to come. Diz served time for violence as a minor, which can qualify as a prior bad act under the law. Nick wants to control how the jury sees this, despite what this will do to his Diz’s image.
“What is going to come first? Your career or your life?”
Nick plans to make him look like an altar boy, not some stone cold killer.
“You know this is the time to be really, really scared.”
“Convince the jury who you really are, Darryl Hamilton not Killa Diz.”
Diz is scared. He slips away from Nick’s car, while they stopped at a red light.
Meanwhile Quinn thinks he found Alexis. Pete went along with him and allowed themselves to walk right into an FBI setup.
Federal agents are looking for Alexis too; as she is their only lead to the real Simon Towers, who hacked into 300 million dollars worth of damages. They are willing to restore Quinn’s identity and give him federal immunity only if he can lead them to Alexis. Without their help, Quinn will have a hard time shaking off the charges.
Nick admonishes Pete. “That’s the point, Peter ... you walked into an uncontrolled situation.”
“When you find a fugitive, you should call the U.S marshals.” It’s good advice that Nick was about to ignore himself.
When Lisa finds Diz rapping an apology on the internet, Nick enlists Quinn's help find Diz. When he finds him, he’s gonna go get him.
Pete reminds Nick that he’s relying on the same techno nonsense to run into an uncontrolled situation.
“Nick, why don’t you send in the U.S. Marshals for crying out loud?”
Later, to Pete’s surprise, Zoey has located Alexis.
Nick and Lisa arrived at the scene where Diz made his broadcast, but no Diz.
They did notice the new lyrics. They were about Candi, the woman everyone thought was the innocent bystander, when in fact she was the intended target. They have a run-in with police and Nick and Lisa are arrested for aiding and abetting a fugitive.
Nick brings to light the woman’s violent boyfriend, who is a more likely suspect and requests that Diz's murder charges be dropped.
In court, Pete gloats in front of the ADA. Not only can he prove Quinn’s identity, he produced the real Simon Towers.
Diz is done running. He’s going to jail for 6 months for jumping bail and obstruction of justice.
Nick questions Diz career choice. “Sell yourself for who you really are.”
It doesn’t sell music which is what he really wants to do. “Thanks for fighting for me.”
Quinn and Alexis get 3 months probation. And no computers.
Pete is now convinced the website is good for business. Nick thinks it attracts too many weirdos. Pete tells him that it's there job to defend those weirdos.
“Think of it as an internet billboard.” He makes Nick do The Defenders stance with him.
Some funny moments in this episode:
- When Zoey is not around to answer calls, Pete and then Nick keep saying their name backwards. “Kaczmarek & Morelli.”
- When Zoey finds Alexis, she lets slip how she thinks her boss is a caveman when it comes to computers.
- Arrested, Nick uses rap lingo to talk to the detective. “Yo.” That's Jim Belushi for you. Oh ya.
Diz tells Nick that he's hopeful. Nice! Are they even aware that his own lyrics eventually proved his innocence? - 10/10
