Hey guys! I noticed no one has been doing recaps of The Vampire Diaries, so I decided to give it a try, even though I’m not the show’s biggest fan.
For me episode four was a bit of disappointment after the strong three episodes we saw this season. It was rather filler, it lacked action and it didn’t have any significant character development. Don’t get angry at me, you Damon fans! I’ll explain myself one thing at a time :)
The episode opens with a dream Stefan had about Katherine. In this dream he also sees Elena and Damon being kind of intimate while playing billiards. This particular image was specifically shown in the promo and I can only imagine how disappointed some of the fans must have been when it turned out to be just a dream. Anyway, Stefan soon wakes up only to find Katherine lying next to him. Katherine is determinate to prove him he loved her once. They start talking about the past and the present and that conversation actually takes about half of the episode. We got to see a few flashbacks, which is always nice, but we didn’t really learn anything shocking or unexpected. It looks like Katherine knew Tyler’s grand-grand-grand-father and she was even aware that he was a werewolf. Mr. Lockwood also knew her little secret, so they became something like friends with benefits. In the end Lockwood was the one who saved Katherine from the tomb and in return she gave him… the famous Lockwood moon stone. In my opinion that was the only good thing about that storyline. Previously I didn’t care at all about the stone, but now when I know it came from Katherine, I’m a little bit more interested to see how it actually works. During the walk in memory lane Katherine also reminds Stefan a scene when he said he loved her. Present-time Stefan doesn’t want to accept that and becomes angry/sad/confused/hurt (sorry for not being more specific but that guy really has just one face for every emotion). The scene wasn’t touching or anything, at least in my opinion. After their little heart to heart Katherine leaves, telling him again that he was the only thing she came back for.
About one third of the episode takes place at aunt Jenna’s barbeque party, which was pretty boring. The barbeque was Alaric and Damon’s idea – they wanted Jenna to invite Tyler’s uncle, so they could prove he was a werewolf. So we get one boring scene after another – uncle Mason doesn’t touch silver, he jokes with lines like “I’m an animal!”, Damon tells him “You’re a real wolf!” and that goes on and on… Eventually Mason tells Damon he knows everything, including the real purpose of the party. Near the end of the episode Damon tries to kill Mason with a silver knife and that really, really brief battle is the only action sequence in the entire episode. Mason stands up and says that silver is not really dangerous to werewolfs. He goes home and tells Tyler the only way for the young Lockwood to trigger the course and to become a werewolf is by killing someone. Spooky!
Elena and Caroline have a little talk at the barbeque party and then again while driving to Stefan’s house. Caroline seems a bit mean and tells Elena that she and Stefan have no future, because they can’t have babies. Elena refuses to believe that and leaves Caroline alone. We soon discover that Caroline was actually working for Katherine, who blackmails her by threatening to kill her again.
A few minutes before the end of the episode Elena, Stefan, Damon and Caroline are all at the bar. The lovely couple has a fight and Elena and Stefan leave angry. They reunite in Elena’s house, explaining it was actually a fake fight (pfff, like anyone thought they would have a real one!). They wanted to make Katherine believe her evil plan to separate them is working. God, how devious is Elena becoming lately?
Bonnie, Matt and Jeremy do not appear in the episode.
So, that was all. Please, forgive me for being a little sarcastic at times, I just couldn’t take seriously some parts of the episode. I really hope the next one would be better, the season had such a great start. I would love to hear your opinion!
