-Ratings Breakdown:
Football-ignited NBC remains the network to beat on Sunday, with Chicago at the New York Giants lifting the Peacock net to a 35 percent advantage over second-place CBS. Third overall was Fox, which got a lift from the half-hour primetime football overrun, followed by ABC.
The Chicago/New York Giants match-up averaged an approximate 14.2 rating/22 share for the 8:30-11 p.m. portion in primetime, with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
Sunday Night Football (NBC)
8:30 p.m.: 14.1/22 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 14.7/22 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 14.9/22 (#1)
10:00 p.m.: 13.7/21 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 13.7/22 (#1)
Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America as follows:
Football Night in America
7:00 p.m. – part one: 2.4/ 4 (#4)
7:30 p.m. – part two: 4.1/ 7 (#4)
8:00 p.m. – part three: 9.2/15 (#1)
CBS had what you would call a consistent overnight performance with its combination of granddaddy 60 Minutes (#2: 9.1/15), The Amazing Race 17 (#2: 7.2/11), Undercover Boss (#3: 8.6/13) and the ninth season-premiere of relocated CSI: Miami (#2: 7.8/13). While CSI: Miami dipped by 16 percent from it’s year-ago season-opener (9.3/16 on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009), it did build from year-ago occupant Cold Case (6.6/11 on Oct. 4, 2009) by 18 percent. Lead-in Undercover Boss, meanwhile, was up by a significant 43 percent from failed year-ago Sunday 9 p.m. occupant Three Rivers (6.0/ 9 on Oct. 4, 2009). And healthy The Amazing Race was on the year-to-year plus side as well, with growth of 17 percent.
Over at ABC, the season-premiere of long-running America’s Funniest Home Videos was below-average, with a distant third-place 3.8/ 7 in the overnights at 7 p.m. Next was aging Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#3: 5.3/ 8 at 8 p.m. – down 23 percent from one year earlier), followed by Desperate Housewives (#2: 9.1/13 – down 1 percent) and Brothers & Sisters (#3: 6.7/11 – down 1 percent) from 9-11 p.m.
Fox got quite a jump in the 7 p.m. half-hour, with an NFL Football overrun at a very dominant 16.2/28 in the overnights. Next was post-game The OT (#2: 8.0/14 at 8:30 p.m.), followed by the animated block of The Simpsons (#3: 5.9/ 9), The Cleveland Show (#4: 4.5/ 7), Family Guy (#4: 5.4/ 8) and the season-premiere of American Dad (#4: 4.0/ 6) from 8-10 p.m. Overnight growth of 20 percent for Family Guy out of The Cleveland Show, plus another expected solid performance among adults 18-49 keeps Family Guy on the winner’s list.
