Just some quick thoughts tonight. I'm quite tired!
While not nearly as strong as the previous two episodes, 'Unfinished' was still a very fun episode of 'HIMYM'. It neatly gave us one of those stories this show does so well where the two main stories revolve around some issue that fits around a theme. Here, the theme was unfinished business.
Robin finally gets to deal with her unfinished business with Don - how that relationship ended so horribly and under such awful circumstances (for those who forget the details, Robin was offered the lead anchor job in Chicago, but she turned it down for Don, who didn't reciprocate when he was offered the gig instead). In 'Big Days', we saw Robin dealing with the break-up, but it was nice to see her get some proper closure here, tying together the phone number memory metaphor with Robin actually forgetting his number.
Though I'm not sure I agree 100% with the decision to make Ted an architect again, I liked the story enough to run with it for now. My main issue is that Ted is usually a rational guy, and it didn't make sense that he'd abandon a solid teaching gig for a company that had already screwed him over once. Plus, we got that great Death Star analogy from Marshall. I'm pretty sure this show handles Star Wars references better than any other show.
On a lesser note, there was Lily's unfinished business with the karate class. It was a bit too silly the first time, but the revenge joke at the end worked well.
And I got a kick out of seeing Barney laying the moves on Ted in order to get that 'Yes'. It gave me one of my favourite 'HIMYM' recurring storytelling devices - seeing the gang list each and every move as we cut back and forth with it working on Ted was brilliant.
A couple of quick thoughts:
- Is poop ever not a funny word? It's better than poo, crap or any other word used to describe feces. Poop.
- I don't think there's any type of clothing Jason Segel doesn't look good in. His baggy trousers from season 2, his pirate costume from season 1, and the 'funk' hat, amongst what I'm sure are others.
- I liked the minor recurring gag of Ted's student Rachel appearing with Barney. I can only assume Barney must have been intrigued by Ted's description of her and tracked her down later on. Gross/Awesome.
I hope they can keep this up.
What did everyone else think?
