It appears Izzie Stevens has cheated death once more.

In an effort to give Alex/Izzie fans some closure in the wake of Katherine Heigl’s abrupt departure last spring, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes contemplated bringing their love story to a tragic end this season. She stops short of saying cancer survivor Izzie would’ve died off screen, but — keep reading and do the math.
“We discussed a lot of options, and the one we settled on felt like the [best idea] without having Izzie actually there,” she explains. “But it also felt like the cruelest possible thing.”

Ultimately, Rhimes couldn’t go through with it. “It was ready to go, but then I went home and literally couldn’t sleep,” she recalls. “It just felt so mean. It wasn’t closure; it just felt brutal. Alex might have never recovered from it. And the audience who loved Izzie would’ve been devastated. So we didn’t do it.”

What now? “I’m open to seeing Izzie again,” she says. “So if [Katherine] were to come back, we would be thrilled to [wrap up her story]. But if she doesn’t, we’ll just move on.”

    Yes, but only for one (or a few) episode(s), and to allow Alex to move on, no kissing (or more ^^).

    i would love to have izzie come back, and katherine heigl said she would be up for it. no more than 3 episodes. just enough to give us long time viewers closure, not just for alex. but also for meredith and cristina.

    I don't even notice she's gone really, at first I really liked her character and now even re-watching the first few seasons she gets on my nerves. I think it's better just to move on. I don't feel I need closure - I think her leaving was enough.

    I'm going with no. The Izzie that was once my favourite character disappeared long before Heigl left. If it was cool Izzie I wouldn't mind her coming back for closure. But Izzie was unbearable in her final few appearances and Frankly I don't want to see her come back.

    She had an exit fitting for her character at the time.

    i would only want her to come back and give real closure to alex and maybe he'll fine someone bc he deserves it especially after yesterdays episode, i love him more than ever and he deserves to find true love again ;)

    She has to come back! For at least three episodes! She was a huge part of Grey's and nobody can tell me she wasn't, because she was! Nobody can tell me the series is better or the same since first George died and than Izzie left. Even if you don't like her, that's fine, but she was a part and everbody (Alex,Mer and Christina) deserve to have closure.
    And I'd really like to know what she is doing now too! Is she working as a doctor again?

    I find it hilarious that so many people wanted Katherine Heigl's head on a stake before she left Grey's Anatomy and, when she finally did leave, fans had to resist the urge to throw a party. Now that she's gone for a while people are clamoring for her return. This show has a very fickle audience.

    She was played by another actress, give Izzie a new face she has skin cancer, give her a new face and a new lease on life.

    Only to settle things with her friends as well. She really left Meredith, who went out on a limb for her, out in the cold. That was cruel.
