Grey's Anatomy - Episode 7.06 - These Arms of Mine - Recap

In the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy, we saw a film crew follow the surgeons on their road to recovery after the shooting. The episode itself was presented as though we were watching the documentary.

This episode managed to split the viewers. For some, the approach worked and for others it didn’t. For me, I loved it. This season of Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t been that good for me so far but last night’s episode put the show back on track. It was a completely fresh approach to the show.

The episode mainly followed three patients: a man who had lost his arms in an accident who had come in for an arm transplant; a young girl who had a tumour in her trachea and we saw Mary, the lady trapped with Bailey during the shooting, return for her surgery.

What I liked most about this episode was how we saw the show more from the patient’s and relative’s perspective. We heard how they felt and we saw what they were going through in much more depth than we usually would. I also enjoyed the follow-up four weeks later when the crew returned to Seattle Grace to see how the three patients were doing. I found these few minutes very touching.

We discover that the man who had the arm transplant is doing great; the young girl who had to have a new trachea grown is also doing extremely well. However, Mary never regained consciousness from her surgery due to unknown complications. I had a tear in my eye when Doctor Bailey went into the room to talk to her husband about switching the machines off. I really wasn't expecting Mary to die after what her character went through back in May.

The episode also looked more in-depth at how the surgeons feel since the shooting. We got to hear how Mark felt when he heard about Derek being shot and we see Christina reveal that being a hero isn’t all that great. Lexie adds some humour to the episode by being her usually self. This week, her security card doesn’t work and she keeps being refused entry to the hospital. We also discover that Arizona and Callie will be moving to Africa together after Arizona won a grant. Jessica Capshaw (Arizona) will be gone for a few weeks now for maternity leave, it will be interesting to see how ‘Calizona’ have changed when/if they return.

Overall, for me, the episode was great. I loved the new approach to the show and enjoyed seeing it from a totally new perspective. We went back to the core of Grey's Anatomy and saw much more of the medical side than we have in recent weeks. It put season 7 back on track for me! I hope everyone else enjoyed it.
