Detroit 1-8-7 - Fall TV Preview

Move aside, Hawaii Five-O! There's another location-plus-number cop show in town, and though Alex O'Loughlin's rippling abs are noticeably MIA, this one's got the return of The Sopranos' Christopher Moltisanti, aka Michael Imperioli (and don't worry—he's fully clothed).

Is ABC's Detroit 1-8-7 worth your precious time? Find out:

Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC)

Premieres: Tuesday, Sept. 21, 10-11 p.m.
Time-Slot Competition: The Good Wife (CBS), Parenthood (NBC), Sons of Anarchy (FX)
Cast: Michael Imperioli, Jon Michael Hill, James McDaniel, Shaun Majumder, Aisha Hinds, D.J. Cotrona
Status: We've seen the pilot

It just might be the best-produced new series of the season. It's nothing incredibly new or exciting, but Detroit 1-8-7 is an elegantly scripted TV series that purports to be a candid look at the homicide division of the long-beleaguered Motor City police department.

Detroit 1-8-7 is a straightforward cop show, a TV genre largely unchanged since the days of Hill Street Blues. But there's a reason such shows never go out of style, formulaic though they may be—the formula works more often than not. Combine a jaded veteran (Imperioli) with a too-chipper rookie, a snarky lieutenant and a pretty lady cop, throw in a couple of entertaining comedic throughlines and a marginally interesting crime story, and voila!

Detroit won't be mandatory viewing until it distinguishes itself with a few more solid episodes, but if your other shows are in reruns one night, you could do a lot worse than this well-made crime drama.
