The "CSI: Miami" team loses one of its own when a psychotic genius goes on a killing spree on the ninth season premiere of the CBS hit drama.
"It is part of the job. You always feel you are prepared [for the loss], but then it is a real shock," David Caruso, who plays Horatio Caine, tells ET.
"When a cop dies, it is a heavy blow whether you knew him or didn't know him, worked with him or didn't work with him," Adam Rodriguez (Eric Delko) adds. "Anytime you do a job where your life is on the line every day and somebody pays the ultimate price, it is a heavy thing to deal with."
In honor of their fallen comrade, the CSIs are outside on a basketball court playing a tribute game.
"We are out by the lovely Pacific Ocean, pretending it is the Atlantic Ocean, playing basketball in honor of our fallen hero," says Emily Protcer (Calleigh Duquesne), who also tells ET that she was concerned it might have been her lying dead as her contract was up.
"The thing that matters about the shot that we take at the end, is that the scene it has to validate his life," David says.
As for the series' move to Sunday nights at 10 p.m. -- after years on Mondays at 10 p.m. -- the cast is upbeat.
"I think we are in good shape. ...I think Sunday night is a good place for us," David says.
And Emily adds, "I think it is going to be a great lead in for us. 'Undercover Boss' has such a 'do-the-right-thing' and 'let's-right-the-wrong' [feel], and it goes nicely with a crime show."
"CSI: Miami" premieres its ninth season on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
