Covert Affairs - Episode 1.08 - What Is And Should Never Be - Recap

This week's episode jumps through time a bit (like season 5 of a certain beloved show); we start off with Annie waking up after a shootout and then we flashback to how it all started and work our way back to the present. So let's see the episode begins....

At the butt end of some serious carnage. Rain is pouring down from everywhere and bodies are on the floor. Annie comes to with a gun in her hand. She doesn't know what happened. The authorities surround her and as she's being arrested she sees the body of a dead woman.

Annie is held in an interrogation room and Joan shows up saying she's Annie's lawyer. FBI Agent Wasabi (who was in the pilot episode), doesn't believe Joan but he isn't going to stop her.
In the interrogation room, Annie tells Joan she doesn't know what happened and why she is being charged with four deaths. Joan says to start at the beginning.

Two days earlier...

Annie is at an auction using her Smithsonian cover. She chats with a Handsome Guy who sits in front of her about art(remember him he'll come in to play later.) Annie then finds someone left her a hint to pay attention to a particular painting. When the painting comes up for auction, someone overbids for the painting to the tune of $10 million, way more than its worth. Annie tries to get the name of the person who placed the bid from the auction director, but she gets nothing. One thing that we, the audience, sees is that the auction director is the woman we saw dead at the start of the episode. The plot thickens.

Later, Annie and Jai, -that's right Annie and Jai- go on a date. Annie invited him to a family barbecue with Danielle and her husband. They actually have a good time. Danielle, who was more excited than Annie, calls Jai the Indian George Clooney. After the barbecue, Jai tells Annie he understands she's having a tough time getting over her last relationship (Ben) but he's in no rush; he'll be around.

Annie, happy after the date, is getting ready for bed when someone offscreen says "Hello, Annie." Its the one and only Ben Mercer. For the first time since Sri Lanka, Ben is face-to-face with Annie. But he's all business, he's not there to kiss and make up. He wants Annie to go after a bad guy, a Turkish arms dealer. That painting that was bought for $10 million has the schematics for a missile guidance system hidden inside. Annie is definitely reluctant to help out in anyway, but Ben says trust me; trust the guy she fell in love with in Sri Lanka. How could she say no? Ben tells her to go back to the auction director, Sophie Jaclyn, she knows what's going on.

Annie follows up with Sophie Jaclyn. Sophie doesn't know who Annie is and why she's snooping around so she pulls a gun. Annie diffuses the situation when she says Ben sent her. Sophie lowers the gun and says that six years ago Ben was her handler, and I mean handler in every sense of the word. And when she was told Ben was dead she felt exposed and made a couple of deals with the Turkish guys. Annie assures her that Ben is still alive and that she needs to come with her back to the CIA so they can keep her safe. So Sophie goes with Annie to get the painting with the schematics, but two Turkish guys show up and this is where the carnage begins.

They escape into a large storage room with antiques and paintings where Annie takes out one of the guys by dropping a shelf on his head. Sophie shoots one of the guys, but he grabs hold of Annie and knocks her out. He goes after Sophie and they both shoot at the same time, its a double kill. One of the shots cause the sprinklers to switch on and the place is completely drenched. This is where we meet Annie at the beginning of the episode. Knocked on the floor with water pouring down, unsure of what happened.

Back in the interrogation room, Annie has been telling Joan this story without all the juicy bits, namely Ben. She says that Sophie Jaclyn tipped her off to the auction and the shady deals.
But Joan isn't buying it, she catches Annie hesitating with some of her answers; like she's adjusting, thinking what to say. Joan tells her to come clean because she'll leave her out to dry and take the rap for four murders and be charged with treason; Joan wants her to come clean about Ben Mercer. Annie then admits that he tipped her off and that she made contact with him. Joan makes a deal with Agent Wasabi and gets the charges dropped. Joan has to be show more inter agency support with the FBI the next time something goes down. Auggie tells Annie that she got off pretty easy.

Later, Annie is at home and she remembers that Ben left a matchbook when he showed up unannounced. She opens it and sees an address written on it.
Annie thinking that she's on her way to see Ben, arrives at a beautiful yacht. This looks like its going to be romantic, the love boat if you will. But she walks in and its not Ben she sees, but the Handsome Guy she chatted with at the auction. He's the Turkish arms dealer.

Taking outside to be killed, Annie gets away and is chased from boat to boat. Annie makes a big leap and barely holds on. The bad guy chasing her tries but ends up in the water. Annie drops an anchor on his head and makes her way back to the docks. But she is held at gun point by another goon. Annie is about to become fish food, but thankfully Jai shows up in the nick of time and saves Annie. (Who needs Ben?)

Joan tells Arthur that she doesn't want to use Annie as bate anymore, but Arthur calls rank and says that's not going to happen. He's going to try and get Ben no matter what.

So let's see by listening to Ben, Annie almost gets tried for treason, almost gets killed at least twice, and conducts a mission without the knowledge of the CIA; she practically went rogue. All together now with lots of sarcasm, "Thank You Ben!"
