The Big Bang Theory - 4.01 - The Robotic Manipulation - Recap

Big Bang Theory returned last night on its new night: Thursday. The episode started off with one of its signature moments of the group having dinner in Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment.
The group is enthusiastically watching Howard use an electronic arm (that he’s stolen/borrowed from NASA) to unpack their food.

As they eat and chat, it is revealed that Sheldon has continued talking to Amy for 4 months. The group tells Penny that Amy is Sheldon’s girlfriend, but Sheldon denies the allegations. Personally, I like the idea of Sheldon having a girlfriend but in an unconventional way. I don’t think I’d ever like to see him cozying up on a couch with Amy and making out. Sheldon reveals that he and Amy have talked about possibly having a child together. This freaks everyone out a bit, but Penny seemed the most bothered by it, and she suggests that he date Amy to get to know the future mother of his children. Sheldon and Amy want to have a child only because they believe their genes would create some sort of super human, and that is something I can see Sheldon believing in, but I don’t think actually going through with it would ever be a good idea.

Howard uses his borrowed robotic arm at home to give him a back massage, and then he realizes he has a better use for it. Not too long after he is giving Leonard and Raj a call, because the robotic hand is stuck on his penis. Leonard and Raj see no solution to Howard’s problem, so they take him to the hospital to get it taken care of. This was one of the most amusing moments in the episode, because of the embarrassment Howard has to face. The Nurse even calls it out over the loud speaker. She then simply turns off the system and the hand releases itself from Howard.

Sheldon asks Penny for a ride for his date, and on the drive to pick up Amy, Penny learns that this was Sheldon’s first date ever, and she brings this up during dinner in an attempt to get Sheldon and Amy to converse. The topic gets switched to Penny’s love life and Sheldon says he has calculated that Penny has 193 men. Amy asks Penny how many of those men she has had sex with, and Sheldon calculates it to be 31 men. Penny is insulted and insists the numbers are way off. I like Amy’s character, because her social awkwardness (similar to Sheldon’s) allows her to be blunt and having no problems asking Penny if she was a homosexual, or if she considered herself a slut.

As Sheldon and Penny return home, Sheldon is still hooked on the idea of having a child with Amy, but Penny threatens to tell his “deeply religious born-again Christian mother who [would not want] a test tube baby born out of wedlock,” and Sheldon instantly gives up on the idea. As Sheldon walks into his apartment, Leonard is on the phone with Howard who tells him it has happened again.
