The first round is going to look a bit more simplified than from Round Two onwards, as I have been preparing text and images to go with the characters, but as I have been so busy the last few weeks, I have only finished around 40 of the 64, and I'm hoping as I did it based on my predictions, that I will have the final 32 covered. I'm moving to New York on Tuesday for 2 months so I won't have time to do the remaining 24 odd this week, so apologies that it won't quite look as groovy as I'd hoped, but all should be sorted for Round Two, which I think should begin a week on Monday. Let The Battle Commence
Today we have 8 characters fighting it out for the chance to reach the final 32, covering 8 different shows. We have 'Grey's Anatomys' top surgeon Derek Shepherd taking on the ever brilliant Fox Mulder from alien phenomenon 'The X-Files' as well as star struck lover and regular plane crash passenger Sun Hwa Kwon from Island drama 'LOST' taking on that girl who just can't stop blabbing (maybe? :P) Blair Waldorf from The CW teen drama 'Gossip Girl.'
Also today, we have that Neil Patrick Harris guy I hear so much of, and his 'How I Met Your Mother' character Barney Stinson taking on one of the pre-tournament favourites for the title in heart-throb and all round Demon Hunter Dean Winchester. And the final matchup of the day sees 'How haven't I found out my brothers a murderer' Debra Morgan from the dark delicacy that is 'Dexter' facing titular role and moonlighter 'Veronica Mars.'

ReplyDeleteStar Trek or Dr House or Friends fans are in their vast majority adults or young adults, they have seen a lot of tv shows and have hindsight about things.
For shows like The Vampire diaries or SPN, a great proportions of the fans are teenaged girls : we all know that they are passionate and impressionable at that age. They are in love with the young male stars of these shows. Their room is full of posters of them, you see what i mean.
Some other more mature girls, also fans of these shows, have understood they could take advantage of this.
They do the twitter thing to call to vote; that's not illegitimate but i call that manipulation ; have you noticed that the contacts are called "followers". You tweet (whistle) and they follow like sheeps.
This phenomenon is quite new in the online polls world; you may think i have too much imagination and i'm paranoid. But the same controversy appeared 10 days ago in a similar tournament at EW.com.

I have nothing against teenaged girls, i'm just saying some are using their passionate but faddish feelings at their advantage.

Twitter is a new way to contact your community and i'm fine with that (russians fans).
Teens vote is as legitimate as another. (one computer, one vote)
My rant is not against poll or SPN or teens, no need to defend them.
Here comes the point i wanted to underline :
when an adult fan tweet an actor, asking him (or her) to post a tweet on his account in favour of a show, i call that manipulation.
It create an unevenness between fan bases, based on taking advantage of impressionable teenagers (mostly girls).

What is going currently going on and is going to occurr by the end of the week (if i'm correct) is that some adult fans are manipulating impressionable teenage girls, fans of the SPN boys.

This round is closed, but they are just waiting for PollDaddy to fix their issues before continuing the contest. when it is back up, we will be voting fro Sam. Four days later, voting for Cas and then the day after that will be voting for Dean again. It's a competition set up like the NCAA basketball tournament and we are still in the first rounds. Keep checking back because the anti-SPN voting has been fierce.

ReplyDeleteI don't think Twittering people to vote is manipulative. It's getting the word out about a site having a contest. I would hope that every show on here is doing the same thing. If not then this becomes a very small competition (made up mostly of LOST fans by the way) and a whole lot less fun. Plus it diminishes the number of people who experience SpoilerTV, which I assume is the whole reason they are hosting the tournament.
ReplyDeleteI assume it's not people Twittering random people on random sites to vote for characters they have never heard of. If they are Twittering people who have already stated they are a fan of the show, then that is the point of an internet poll. I first heard of this site because of the Best Show competition. Without someone posting the link, I would never have come here and I would have lost out. I have rented/downloaded shows I have never watched, become fans of characters I never knew existed, and have commented on a variety of show's articles. I have found a community of dedicated TV watchers where I can speak my mind about shows and not feel like I am going to get blasted by someone. I value this and only wish some of my favorite shows had a larger community here so I could discuss those too. I hope people are Twittering like mad about this contest because some of those tweetees may end up sparking a great conversation in the comments. That's my biggest disappointment in the character contest so far - not near as much good conversation about why people are voting for a character.
Also, teens are allowed their opinion too. Even if they don't always vote the way I want them to, I'm glad they are letting their voice be heard too. There are far more adults in the world than teens. If we want to outweigh their votes, we just have to get better at using the internet to communicate to other adults. Maybe we can ask a teen to help us. :-)
Thanks jillyanne! I didn't want to respond to that one. I am a superfan of SPN. I am not a teen and I have never been described as bat crazy, although I admit some SPN fans can be described that way. Of course, show me a group (TV or otherwise) that has a strong fan base that doesn't have a few loonies in the bunch. My hope on these sites and others are to get new people to watch the show. It has been successful in the Best Show competition and I hope it will be in this one too. Like jillyanne said, we have to make our own publicity for SPN because the CW does nothing to promote it. I believe in the Winchester brothers ability to capture people's attention and to make others empathize for them. I can only do that because of the strong writing on the show. I care about these characters and I am glad to be able to share my love of SPN with other fans online since I don't get much opportunity to do it in my real life. I hope you will try SPN out. If you don't like it, no harm, no foul. But maybe you will become one of those crazy fans you were talking about. :-)

I agree that 'the twitter thing' could be seen as manipulation. I also stand by what I said about polls being one of the few avenues for fans to raise the SPN profile. Shows like House etc. are put in prime time slots and promoted, while SPN is not, yet it still manages to hang in there.
BTW - I loved Terminator SCC too!

ReplyDeleteThe point is this round should have been easy for Dean given previous response from this site. It was not. That means every round will be a fight and Dean is the most targeted character in this race. I doubt any other character has as many people actively voting against him, whether they have seen the show or not. On these comments, someone already admitted that Dean was the better character but still voted against him because he doesn't want Dean to win. If Dean wins this, it means SPN fans have worked the hardest and I'm just fine with that.
Guam? I really think you need to look at those great maps that DarkUFO made for the Best Show contest. Pick a country that's all lit up like a Christmas tree and start your campaigning there. :-P Say what you want about the Russian SPN fans, but I'm sticking to their voting power. In either the X-Files or LOST vs SPN contest, SPN was losing right until people started commenting that they were from Russia and they had just posted SpoilerTV on the Russian SPN site. Suddenly, SPN was getting hundreds of votes. All SPN fans are fabulous (well except those crazies that make the rest of us look bad), but the Russian fans have awesome reach.

I heard about the polls only 2 hours ago, and I was very upset about the current results. I asked about 300 people to vote for Dean in the last two hours. I think Dean was very much needed those votes and I'm glad he won. In addition, the largest fansite in Russia posted a link on this polls (supernatural dot ru). I'm glad it helped. Congrats!

Still, people will be gunning for us even more now so let's all be there later in the week when it's Sam and Cas's turns to have the target pinned on their backs. I love how hard the SPN-verse pulls together when we get in a pinch.

ReplyDeleteI echo your Mulder and raise you a Dean. I knew he had a target on his back from people who didn't like the results of the Best Show contest, but this is ridiculous. Where is the Dean love? No other character has ever grabbed my interest and held it for 5 years. I like Barney but there isn't a whole lot of depth to his character. Dean however continues to amaze me. He could have been a one-note, bad boy with a shotgun character, but he started evolving beyond that from the first episode. Even if we only had his devotion to family and passion to keep the world safe, he would be a more compelling, deeper character than Barney. And those are just the tip of the iceberg in the character of Dean.

Ok so there are some 'batshit crazy' Supernatural fans around, some with more time on their hands than others. One of the reasons we're so batshit crazy is that we have this awesome and unique show that has a little of everything - humor, horror, suspense, good stories, plus fantastic actors, writers, directors and crew - I could go on - and we get really tired of "the powers that be" completely ignoring it!

(I'm from New Zealand btw) We have to resort to using polls like this to raise the SPN profile - there's not much else we can do. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it - there is so much CRAP on TV, we should be grateful for a little show like SPN that is always worth watching. Not too many shows make it to 6 seasons, so they're doing something right!

You're exactly right about this being backlash from the Best Show competition. Everyone is going to want Dean and Sam out of this as early as possible. I'm sure a great deal of the people voting Barney have never watched Supernatural and possibly never watched HIMYM either.
