I've done a small mid-season review for Haven. (I'm assuming the show still has twelve episodes please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Since my last recap, I have grown to love Haven. I look forward to watching the show and for me Friday nights on SyFy are something to be excited about.
Now we're six episodes in, I really feel we have gotten to know the characters well. For me, Audrey carries the show. I enjoy her empowerment as a woman and how she seems to be fearless to almost anything in the show. I think one of her best episodes so far was in the episode "Ball and Chain" when Duke was aging and Audrey was having to help try and save him. Nathan is another character I have come to love, I really feel a sense of mystery around him, he isn't telling us everything. His relationship with Duke is also very enjoyable to watch as viewer. In reality, there isn't a regular character I'm not fond of on this show. I am still deciding whether I am on the Audrey/Duke or Audrey/Nathan ship however!
Since the first episode, the episodes have been getting better and better for me. 'Consumed', 'Ball and Chain' and 'Fur' were by far, in my opinion, the best episodes yet. I felt that in the earlier episodes it was all very predictable and "easily solved" where as in the later four episodes it has become more of a mystery.I adored the latest episode 'Fur'. I think it was the most original episode and it has twists I was not expecting. The only negative thing about this episode was the lack of Duke.
The mystery 'powers' that the residents of Haven hold get better and better each week. Although some have been used in other shows before such as the ability to age in "Ball and Chain", Haven adds a mysterious twist to them. Especially when trying to guess who the person with the 'power' is. As the show progresses, it will be interesting to see what other ideas the producers have for 'powers'. I think if they keep sticking to the same episode outline of there being a mysterious going on, Audrey and Nathan trying to uncover who is it behind it while the audience also guesses the show may become less exciting. I'm curious to know whether the show plans to have a "big-bad" for the season or for later seasons. This is Sci-Fi so the show could go in any direction.
My main criticism of the show is how there seems to be a current lack of a big back-story. In the first episode we were led to believe that Audrey was going to be there to try and solve the mysteries behind Haven and how she is connected but we haven't really got any further with that since episode 1. All we know is that the woman in the picture was named "Lucy" (I think that was the name).
I would love find out more about the town itself and how Audrey is connected. It's getting to the point now where I feel the show needs to take a step forward to keep people hooked. We need some sort of clue to help us uncover this mystery rather than it just having a quick mention each episode.
In the remainder of the season, I want to see more mysterious, puzzling powers and a bigger back story to connect the episodes together more. Next week's preview seems to involve "voo-doo" which looks interesting to watch!
