Haven - 1.07 - Sketchy - Recap

I was going to wait a couple more episodes before doing another review but after last night's episode I had to write one.

After last night's episode I felt I really clicked with Haven. I've been a fan of the show since it began but I've always thought that there has been something missing in the story line/writing for each episode. While I was watching "Sketchy" however, this all changed!

I adored the relationship between Audrey and Nathan this episode. I loved the sarcasm from Audrey to Nathan over his "dating skills". The scene where Audrey tries to set Nathan up with Jess on a date is probably the funniest scene in Haven to date. Poor Nathan really was clueless. I loved it.

I also enjoyed the Audrey/Duke relationship in this episode. I think I'm on board with this ship (as much as I love Nathan). Duke certainly brings a much needed comical character to the show. One of my favourite lines from this episode was "Not showing you will probably be the most fun I have today". This is when I realised how much I loved Duke and Audrey together. The relationships this episode added some humour to the show which was very enjoyable. The cast are really fitting well together.

The episode itself was very mysterious. Each case was different which made it a lot more exciting and puzzling. Usually each person suffers the same fate but this time we saw people being hurt in different ways which made it more intriguing. I liked how it wasn't the normal voodoo as well, there was no sticking pins in dolls which is what I was expecting when I saw the preview for the episode. I found the sketching idea very original (I'm not sure if this is actually normal voodoo but I loved the idea either way). The whole town was at risk this episode which made the show more edge of your seat even though we knew the town would not be destroyed.

We really saw a different side to Audrey this episode. For once we saw that she was vulnerable to these "powers", they did affect her and she did seem to blame herself for them. I am glad she quickly bounced back though. I thought Emily Rose pulled this scene off really well. I have watched her appear in many of my favourite TV shows (Brothers and Sisters, Ghost Whisperer, ER, Private Practice) and have always thought she had done a great job. I'm really happy she has found a lead role that works for her so well, she really is doing a great job. She is quickly becoming one of my favourite TV actresses.

This week was my favourite "power" so far. Each week they seem to be getting better. However, the show has still failed to progress with the back-story. How is Audrey connected? What is causing these "powers" that are affecting the people of Haven?

Even so, I still thought this was the best episode to date. I hope in the next few episodes we start to get more clues about Haven, it makes it more fun when we have a mystery to solve. As far as I am aware there are six episodes left of this season (please correct if wrong). I'd love to see this back half of the season really develop into a big mystery as well as still giving us spookier cases each week.

I'm so on board with this show. Fingers crossed it gets a second season!
