Haven - Pilot - Recap

When I first heard about Haven I was excited to watch the show. It had been compared to Fringe and The 4400 which made me even more keen on watching the show, could this SyFy drama live up to these other shows?

The main character in the show is FBI agent Audrey Parker played by Emily Rose. Her performance throughout the episode I felt certainly helped to carry the show. She was able to show a sense of humour while also showing us her tough side. I hope she gets to do lots of kick-ass scenes in the show. We also learn that Audrey has a history that is somehow connected to the town, at the end she decides to stick around to find out more.

The other main character who we were introduced too is Nathan Wournos played by Lucas Bryant. We soon learn that he suffers from a condition were he can't feel pain which could come in handy for a show like Haven. (Although a patient on House suffered from that once and it didn't have a good ending). His character seems to be hiding an even deeper secret which adds to the eeriness of the show.

When we were first introduced to the town, Haven, there was a strange feeling to it. It was the type of town you would expect to appear in a horror film, isolated and full of strange characters. I liked this as I feel it gives the show more mystery to the show and the setting.

Agent Parker had been sent to Haven in order to complete a task for the FBI. However, when she arrives, she finds the person she had been looking for had died. She stuck around to help with the investigation of his death.

It didn't take long before strange events started to occur. The pilot itself had freaky weather events including hail, fog and storms. We later learnt this was controlled by one of the town's inhabitants, Marianne(SP?). We also learnt that another character, Conrad, seemed to have super strength. It will be interesting to see what other powers this town holds.( It reminds me of The 4400.)

The main criticism I have for the pilot is I felt it was a little short on the supernatural side to the story line, the first half didn't seem to be very Sci-Fi at all. At some points, I felt like I was watching an episode of CSI. The second half of the episode certainly picked up though and opened the show to lots of different avenues.

The show had a strong start and it will definitely be interesting to see what happens next. Will we see these people with super powers form together to fight an evil? As I haven't read the books, I have no idea but I will certainly be watching to find out.
