Covert Affairs - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Recap

Here we go, one of the hottest new shows to premiere this summer is Covert Affairs on the USA Network. Here's a recap of the pilot episode. WARNING: SPOILERS EVERYWHERE :)

We meet Annie ( taking a lie detector test. The questions start off pretty basic; we learn Annie is 28 and speaks 6 languages but then things get personal. Annie talks about her three week fling with a guy named Ben. We get a flashback of them running on the beach where he buys two matching sea-shell bracelets. She's in paradise until Annie wakes up to a note on Ben's pillow. Just like that he's gone. Even with all of that she says that she'll be able to separate her personal life from her job.

Soon after Annie is pulled from the CIA training school and heads to Langley, CIA headquarters.

At Langley she meets the instantly likable Auggie. He's the Tech Ops guy; he gives Annie all the cool gadgets and monitors Annie when she's on her missions. Oh yeah, he's also very smooth with the ladies (the fact that he's blind seems to help.) She then meets her no-nonsense boss Joan and gets the details on her first mission: Meet the contact and copy whatever information he has onto a special blackberry.

But the first mission couldn't go any worse: the contact she meets gets killed, she almost gets killed, and she forgets the blackberry that has all the information she was supposed to retrieve. So whatever little confidence Joan had in Annie is shot to you-know-where. She's having a bad day all around, but she bounces back with a pep talk from Auggie; he's definitely rooting for her.

Her home life has a few hiccups as well when her well-meaning sister sets her up with a guy who just blabs on and on and on. Her sister doesn't want Annie to be alone and of course she wants to help her forget about Ben.

Pretty soon Annie figures out that the dead contact isn't the real Russian assassin. The Russian assassin is still out there and with the help of Auggie and Joan they realize his target is a Russian journalist.

Joan and Annie race over there just in time to warn him of the danger. Realizing he has no shot, the assassin, dressed as a waiter, slips away. But! Annie recognizes his face; it's a guy who hit on her minutes before she met her contact. He was in the lobby of the hotel using a fake accent; he's the Russian assassin!

So he takes off running and Annie chases him into a secluded train station. Then out of nowhere, he grabs her from behind at gunpoint. Annie puts up a fight; she spins and kicks his gun away, but he pretty soon overpowers her and clamps his hand around her neck and starts to choke her to death.

About to lose consciousness, her vision getting blurry, she sees someone heading her way; they pull out a gun and shoot the assassin twice in the chest. Annie's saviour is Ben. The guy she's been looking for, hoping for has just saved her life. Then just as suddenly as he appeared, he hops on a train and is gone (again.)

We get a scene where Joan is talking with Arthur Campbell, who is the head of clandestine operations. He's also Joan's husband who she suspects of having covert affairs with other women, if you get my drift. Anyway, from their talk it seems that they are using Annie as bait to lure Ben out into the open. (Ben seems to be a rogue agent that the CIA is after. We don't know why as yet but should make for a lot of intrigue the rest of the season.)

After all the craziness, we see Annie at home looking at the note Ben left on her pillow after his first vanishing act. It reads: "The truth is complicated. Forgive me." She then picks up the sea-shell bracelet Ben bought for her. Then we see a car outside of Annie's place. It's Ben and he's holding his matching sea-shell bracelet too. End of Episode.
