Katy Mixon, John Hawkes and Andrew Daly co-star opposite co-creator Danny McBride in HBO's comedy pilot "East Bound and Down." The project, from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Prods., centers on Kenny Powers (McBride), a burned-out former professional baseball pitcher who returns to his small Southern hometown, where the only job he can find is as a substitute gym teacher. Mixon ("Blind Dating") will play Kenny's high school girlfriend, now a teacher at the school and engaged to the principal (Daly). HBO has picked up the show for six episodes.
Let's just jump right on in...this show is hilarious. I will say this though, its a brand of humor that you have subscribe to before you even lay eyes on the show. The main character is about the crudest, most offensive a-hole to ever grace the screen. If shock comedy is your thing, then you will love it, Kenny just raises the bar for offensiveness with every passing minute. If the shock-value that South Park is known to bring has you rolling with laughter, you will love this show. If Billy-Bob Thorton's "Bad Santa" had you laughing, then you will love this show. I imagine frat-boys will go insane with laughter with every viewing. Definitely not a family comedy, in fact, let your kids watch this show and I would dare say you are a bad parent.
Every single thing about Kenny is just deplorable, he's a racist bigot, he's an egocentric, insensitive, rude, disgusting jerk that just oozes sleaze from every pore in this body. He even sports a killer mullet that Achy-Breaky Billy Ray Cyrus would be proud of. Watching him interact with just about anyone is hilarious, he's so over the top offensive its hard not to laugh. Listening to him make plans over the phone with a hooker in front of his brother's family is hilarious...."Whadda mean I gotta pay for a blow-job and a hotel room?! You can just come over here." He then hands the phone to his jaw-dropped sister-in-law and tells her that her cell phone sucks. Her disgust doesn't even register with Kenny.
Bottom line: Hilarious, no doubt about it. If you are easily offended by crude humor, then stay away. If you are like me and think Will Ferrell is funny reading the phone book and allowing him to be let off the leash to make a sitcom is your idea of comedy heaven, then "East Bound and Down" will be appointment viewing for you.
