Morpheus, the raven-haired Lord of Dreams, has existed for much of creation and has traveled far and wide throughout that time. His presence has been felt at the dawn of mankind, in the discoveries of the European Renaissance, along the abandoned corridors of hell, in the myths of feudal Japan and along London streets on the eve of the new Millenium. He’s been nearly everywhere, it seems. So, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to learn he’ll soon be seen on Netflix.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Neil Gaiman's beloved Vertigo comic series, The Sandman, has been ordered to series at Netflix. A formal deal has not been closed.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Netflix has signed a massive financial deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the DC comic series into a live-action television show. It's noted to be the most expensive TV series ever attempted by DC Entertainment.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, The Catch, Grey's Anatomy) will pen the adaptation and serve as the showrunner. An episode count has not been revealed. Gaiman (American Gods, Good Omens) will executive produce alongside David S. Goyer (Krypton, Constantine, Da Vinci's Demons, Isaac Asimov's Foundation).

Neil Gaiman's horror, fantasy and mythology tale is one that follows Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, and the Endless, the powerful group of siblings that includes Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

Sources say Warners, which controls the IP, took the Sandman TV pitch to multiple outlets, including corporate sibling HBO. The premium cable network did not make a play for the series given the massive price tag attached (and likely number of other big world shows in the works) and Netflix snapped it up as the streamer continues to make an active play for massive IP that could be turned into subscriber-friendly franchises a la Amazon's Lord of the Rings and HBO's Game of Thrones.

The Sandman is a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Jill Thompson, Shawn McManus, Marc Hempel and Michael Zulli and more, with covers by Dave McKean. Beginning with issue #47, it was placed under the imprint Vertigo. It chronicles the adventures of Dream (of the Endless), who rules over the world of dreams. It ran for 75 issues from January 1989 until March 1996.
