From the very beginning,
Lucifer has been a story about the angelic family of God. He is both the catalyst and antagonist for all of Lucifer’s actions. In this story, God’s intentions are truly unknown. Is this God benevolent or malevolent? Given that the show has only really explored one side of God’s story, that as told by his ex-wife and sons, it’s hard to truly know. He comes off as seeming the latter in regards to his family and the former to his human creations. Though, there are moments where God’s plan does seem to be attempting to aid his family. He’s been hard on Lucifer but is that because he lost faith in his favorite son or because he truly wanted to help his son? Is everything because he hates his family or because he loves them so much he wants to do everything in his power to ensure a bright future for them? There are a ton of questions surrounding God, so when God Johnson (Timothy Omundson) randomly appears in Lucifer’s life there is a lot for the two of them to discuss. However, Lucifer must first determine if the man is truly his father or just a man who has lost his mind.
Due to the nature of the case of the week, Lucifer finds himself having to go to some pretty extreme lengths to try and get some answers. He gets to a point where even Chloe is concerned for him and she’s willing to overlook a lot in regards to him. Thanks to the case, he finds himself working very closely with Dr. Linda this week, which means some hilariously awesome scenes between Rachael Harris and Tom Ellis. Whenever these two are paired up in an episode it’s basically a guarantee for hilarity and they don’t disappoint. While Harris does magical things in Dr. Linda’s office it’s always fun for the show to put her out in the world in different environments. Dr. Linda helps Lucifer a lot this week both as a friend and a therapist. She’s exactly the character he needs by his side in this episode.
Especially given that his other best friend, Maze, is a bit busy with her new best friend, Chloe. That’s right, two episodes in a row Maze and Chloe get to have a bit of a team-up. Given Chloe and Maze’s differences in how to handle situations, it’s safe to say that there are some pretty funny miscommunications. Things quickly stop being funny for Maze when an unexpected person turns up and drops a rather heavy bit of information on her.
A lot happens in this episode and it clearly gears things up for the final big season finale push. It ties deeply into the core of the series and brings up a lot of emotional things for Charlotte and Lucifer. Timothy Omundson is brilliant as God Johnson and his chemistry with Tom Ellis and Tricia Helfer is what makes this episode something truly special. While Charlotte does interact with God Johnson, it’s actually her interactions with another character that provide the most interesting element to her arc in the episode. A lot of questions come to mind as the episode starts and while some are answered throughout the hour it ends with just as many questions still hanging unanswered.
This is a very strong episode with a very complex story that returns the show to that perfect balance of procedural and celestial. It’s when the show balances itself that some of the best episodes come to fruition. This episode is an exemplary example of that, with big grand scenes fitting of celestial beings to good ole fashion procedural detective work and a few big reveals just to cap it all off. Is the God in this episode the real God? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out, but the payoff at the end is what everything has been clearly building towards. The last seconds of the episode seem to be the launching point of big things. Get ready, because this episode is divine.
