Well, talk about a bloodbath. Of course, this was not the first adaption of a comic book to have a fight scene set in a Church, (A memorable recent example is perhaps the one in Kingsman: The Secret Service with Colin Firth set to the sound of Free Bird - Link Here if you haven't already seen it!). But See took it to a whole new level, as Jesse found himself under attack by men in suits who were teased in the first episode. However, luckily for him, Cassidy was able to step in, and well, you know the rest. It was absolutely brutal and a real highlight of the series so far. After all, how many shows do you get where a guy's arm has just been chopped off and it's still sliding towards the main character's unconscious head, with a chainsaw in hand?
That was such an awesome moment, and it was great seeing Cassidy take on the guys in suits as well. Both Jesse and Cassidy are really working out well for me as fantastic additions to the show, and we got to see what they were capable of here, Cassidy in particular. Tulip of course is great as well, making it a perfect three out of three for the main cast.
See opens in 1881 nearby the town of Ratwater in a disconnected opening much like the one set in Africa in the Pilot. We get a man in town who's going to get medicine for his sick wife and daughter, but he takes his coat and hat with him and leaves his guns behind. Those who have read the comic will know who this Cowboy character is, but I'm not so lucky. We do get some amazing visuals with the man riding on his horse though, and it's always good to see that even though he is a character from the comic that those who haven't read it yet like me will be able to understand what's going on.
Here Jesse is still struggling with his faith, and it's clear that he's dealing with his newfound "Word of God" powers that make people do what he tells them to. He ends up using it three times in different scenarios, including stopping the evening's wildlife from making any noise. It appears that he's understood that his powers mean that things can be interpreted differently beyond Jesse's intentions as was the case with last week's use where we saw a man commit suicide with his mother as a witness. But here he uses it to make a future child molester forget about who he's going to target, as well as helping a girl who is comatose after riding on horseback. It's an interesting new power that Jesse has and things are only going to get more challenging going forward for him when it comes to any issues that he has with morality. How far does he take this power? What will the consequences be of his actions?
We'll have to wait and see, because the show is still playing a relatively slow burn plot-wise in the form of the hit-men who attack him in the Church that I mentioned above. Cassidy's over-the-top fight scene really worked, and I hope that we get more fight scenes as brutal and absurd as this in the future. It's another thing that fits right at home with what we've come to expect in the show so far.
See was another excellent hour of Preacher and is quickly becoming another solid addition to AMC's line-up, joining the likes of Halt and Catch Fire, Hell on Wheels and more. We got some interesting new character additions to this show this season, the aformentioned Cowboy character that served as a tease of things to come, along with one of the most corrupt figures in Annville, Odin Quinncannon (Jackie Earle Haley), which is a hell of a name. It'll be interesting to see where these two, along with the already established Tulip, who continued to try and tempt Jesse back down his darker ways, so we'll have to wait and see what happens going forward. Don't forget it's still early stages here.
