15:10 - Gotham - Season 2 - Interviews

Heading into season 2, Gotham, both as a city and as a show, is getting a new look. While the city has a new king in Oswald Cobblepot, the show has a new format. By dividing the season into two, 11-episode halves, the show hopes to gives viewers a more serialized drama this time around.
“It is a very, very different show,” star Ben McKenzie tells EW. “It is almost completely serialized. We’re aiming for a grander, saga-type construction in which we can actually sit with the characters and understand their motivations and how the turbulence of their lives affects the greater landscape.”
And with the line-up of villains that’s already been announced, there are going to be plenty of evil minds for the audience to sit with. “What we’ve done is up the ante a level,” adds executive producer Danny Cannon. “Now that we have the confidence of the world, we can start to add characters. So when we call this season the rise of the villains, it’s very much that. More villains move in to take their piece of the pie and Gordon has to go to very extreme measures to quell the chaos that ensues.”
And as much as Gordon might try, not all of those extreme measures can be described as “moral.” Instead, season 2 is going to see Gordon embrace a bit of darkness to get his job done. “We’re going to be playing with the notion of the rise and fall and possibly rise and fall again of both his standing in Gotham as a public figure and also his ability to keep it all together morally and otherwise — his relationship with Thompkins [Morena Baccarin] and everything,” McKenzie says. “So it’ll be pretty turbulent.”
Speaking of turbulence, it’s easy for things to get out of hand when your city houses a number of villains in one, not-so-secure facility. “At the beginning of the season, we visit Arkham, where so many people that Gordon has locked up and so many potential villains share the same air,” Cannon adds. “And if they were to get out, well who knows what kind of chaos is going to hit the streets.”
Specifically, there’s one villain who will be causing chaos when the season kicks off — Jerome, the show’s maybe-Joker. ”You’re going to want to watch the first episodes,” McKenzie said. “Jerome is very much in those, and Cameron Monaghan does an absolutely fantastic job in the role. I think it will give the show the shot of adrenaline that it needs coming back into season 2.”

This season has been dubbed "The Rise of the Villains." How well does Oswald play with others?
He's getting better. This was established in the first season; his relationship with Gordon comes from a place of, he really does see [Jim] as a friend and also trustworthy. At the same time, Oswald sees Gordon as someone he needs to work with. He needs to have an ally on that side to achieve his goals. Oswald needs to work with people. At the same time, he's working with someone and keeping tabs on them, so that he use things against them. That is his m.o.

Friday’s newest episode of Continuum, “Power Hour,” explores who we become, whether it’s Dillon’s gig working for Kellog, Julian’s road to becoming Theseus or even Edouard Kagame, who returns in a surprising way. Kellog is front and centre in the episode, throwing his power in the faces of Kiera and Carlos, and pulling the strings behind the scenes with regard to the Future Soldiers’ little project. A warning: not everyone survives “Power Hour.”
We spoke to Stephen Lobo this past May about playing Continuum‘s big bad for the past four seasons, and what he’s got lined up next.
Are you going to miss this character?
Stephen Lobo: I’m going to miss the heck out of this character. Guys like he and Jason are less precious. Kellog isn’t talking about the quantum physics of it all and the time travel. He’s rooted in a relatable reality. It’s been fun.
What was your reaction to the Season 4 renewal/last season news?
I’ve never been involved in a series where we’ve had the opportunity to finish on our terms. That in and of itself was really something to be grateful for. There was no news about the pickup for so long that at first I was thinking, ‘We’ve got to come back,’ to ‘Maybe we’re not coming back.’ And then there was a letting go process. So when the six episodes came I was like, ‘Wooooo!’ I was really, really grateful. They left me in such a great spot in Season 3, it was great to be able to play it out. In Season 1 and Season 2 he was kind of working in the shadows and now he’s going for it.
Everybody is going to be gunning for him and it’s all about survival. Live or die.
Kellog immediately distanced himself from the rest of Liber8 back in Season 1. What’s the analysis you’ve put into that move?
On the one hand there’s an instinct. He’d seen so much pain and suffering in his time that when he was given a chance it was a natural thing to do. On the other hand, here’s a guy who has been let down by every other thing that he’s lived for. Family, friends, society. Everything in his life has told him he’s worthless, so this is his way of responding to that. There is kind of a god complex going on. It’s the ultimate challenge for him and it’s what’s meant to be in his deluded, corrupt, completely unhealthy mind.
What was your reaction to reading the series finale script?
I couldn’t stop talking Simon Barry’s ear off. I just kept texting him, ‘Thank you so much, what a wonderful way to do it.’ What he accomplishes in that 45 minutes of television is beautiful and poetic. There were so many surprises and twists … the fans will be blown away.
Are you going to be taking anything from the set?
I’m going to be taking some suits! [Laughs.] Some fine threads. I’m going to go through my wardrobe!
Looking forward, being on a genre show like Continuum means not only the possibility of a crowd-funded feature but also the chance to attend conventions for as long as the fan support is there. Are you into that?
I’ve never experienced this kind of connection with fans before. It’s really amazing. You get this in theatre, this immediate reaction from he fans. If this show can receive some other life and there is a calling for that, I would be there 100 per cent. I love this guy and playing Kellog has never been boring.
What about developing your own projects?
I’ve got the rights to a play and I’ve asked Brian Markinson [Inspector Dillon] to direct and Kyra Zagorsky to be in it. I had never met Kyra, and I asked her to be in the play and then she was cast in this [as Future Soldier Vasquez], which is crazy. John Cassini is involved as well. That’s a play called The Motherfucker with the Hat, a wonderful play out of New York and that will be a blast. Coming off this show and Arctic Air, this is a nice spot to be in. I can breathe a little bit and be a little more choosy with my projects. I’d love to not have to do everything that comes across the table.

Brace yourself comic-book fans, but you may have been led astray on a few things when it comes to female warriors.
“It’s hard to fight abominable snowmen in your bikini, despite what the comics might teach you,” says Emily Andras, executive producer and showrunner for the new Calgary-based sci-fi fantasy series, Wynonna Earp.
This is why, Andras explains, Wynonna the TV character will not quite match the comic-book version when it comes to attire … or lack of attire.
To be clear, actress Melanie Scrofano’s Wynonna will still be quite fetching. But she will just look more like an ass-kicking modern-day cowboy than the fanboy’s dream who appeared in the comic books by Beau Smith in the 1990s.
“We are still keeping the sexiness, Melanie is a very beautiful woman,” says Andras. “She is surrounded by very beautiful people. This is definitely a cast of gorgeousity. But we are really going for a real look. This is a real woman. She is a three-dimensional woman with flaws and feelings and she wears pants. But boy she looks great in them.”
Earlier this week, production began on the 13-episode series in Calgary and surrounding areas, which is scheduled to begin airing in April on Syfy in the U.S. and an as-yet unnamed channel in Canada.
Scrofano plays the descendant of famed gunslinger Wyatt Earp, who becomes a part of a crime-fighting squad that focuses on ridding the world of demons and monsters. She will be joined by what may or may not be the ghost of Doc Holliday, played by Montreal’s Tim Rozon from Being Human and Schitt’s Creek. Shamier Anderson, from Defiance and The Next Step, and Dominique Provost-Chalkley also star.

Step forward Ragnor Fell!
We are pleased to announce that Adam Kenneth Wilson will play warlock Ragnor Fell in the upcoming Shadowhunters TV series. Adam is no newbie to our screens. You might have seen him in Ending the Eternal and 24 Hour Rental to name just a few!
Ragnor Fell is a quirky, prickly loner that has a courtly manner dating back to another time. He is the former High Warlock of London, as well as being one of Magnus Bane's oldest friends.
We can't wait to see him on Shadowhunters next year!
