...It’s time for you to read my preview of The Muppets tonight!
Within the first few minutes, the Muppets hit all the right notes. I’ve been a big fan of Jim Henson’s The Muppets. I can remember the first time I watched them, I’ve loved all of their movies, from the ones in Oz to Space and the many Christmas ones. Though it’s been many years, they’ve never lost what’s made them lovable to the audience and this show is proof of that. This show makes you smile, laugh and feel happy and that's the most important thing.
So let’s get into my preview. The entire episode was excellent, I enjoyed every single second and when the curtains closed, I was ready for more (I wish it was longer), thankfully I’ve been lucky enough to see the second episode.
“Pig Girls Don't Cry”, the pilot written by Bill Prady & Bob Kushell who are most notably known from their ties to The Big Bang Theory. The premiere is well written and brilliantly acted by Miss Piggy and co.
The Muppets will succeed on it’s nostalgic feel whilst also feeling very modern and fun. If you aren’t a muppets fan or haven’t heard or seen of them (were have you been, jokes) then this will be your way to meeting some of the most amazing characters from my childhood and now, I suppose your adulthood (not sure who my general audience is, so apologizes). Since the TV landscape is known for using sex to sell, this could also be the show for you, Kermit does say the word ‘sexy’, that’s got to be enough to seduce you in, right? I’d hope so.
Speaking of sexy, we meet Denise. I repeat, we meet Denise. She’s the new pig on the block, the new pig in the parking lot, the new pig in the office block (those are a work in progress). I have to say, she’s interesting, her accent though, it wasn’t what I was expecting, to be honest, I wasn’t even sure what I was expecting when it comes to her. I'm Team Piggy, if that even was a thing, my childhood heart longs for Miss Piggy and Kermit to reunite, though I doubt that would please Denise, I feel she’s probably starring at me whilst I type this now…. Denise is the network marketer for the show, she’s also quite naughty, maybe it’s because of the way she speaks, you’ll understand when you see her. The undertones in the writing are really funny throughout the episode but it's especially good between Kermit and Denise. I will say that Cross Promotional Synergy Meetings are were you go if you wanna meet a pig, well if your a frog with a certain attraction to pigs, and if your lucky you’ll get to “cross promote” (hint hint).
Up Late With Miss Piggy is one of the… I mean the main segment on the show (Disclaimer: Miss Piggy didn’t pay me to say this). It reminded me of some of my favorite Late Night Talk Shows such as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and most recently The Late Late Show with James Cordon. They should guest star amongst many people I have on a list.
Forget those boring cat fights that are over-sexualized on TV, theres one to be seen with Elizabeth Banks and another muppet, it’s quite fun and involves a car (of sorts) too. Fuzzy has some very funny scenes, I can't help but want to hug him, though that might be offensive to assume bears want hugs... Fozzie if your reading this, your awesome.
Now to the guest stars, which have been announced and featured in these promos and sneak peeks also.
Tom Bergeron was wonderful. I’ve been a fan of his since I was a child growing up watching America’s Funniest Home Videos. Imagine Dragons also guest star, fun fact, they kept their original name. Lastly, Elizabeth Banks from Pitch Perfect and The Hunger Games fame guest stars in the biggest role of the three. Her role is important, she’s very funny and her history with Miss Piggy is an interesting one. Let’s just say, read the script before you audition for a movie.
There are a few universal messages, I felt when watching this, now I’m now where near being a middle aged man but Kermit (whom is way past middle aged but is just so physically youthful, I wonder what he uses?) does get affected by someone telling him he’s getting a little tummy, heartbreaking I know, it’s kind of fun to see this though, it’s rare body image questions for men (yes men) are posed on TV. Another message I felt was shown, was that of not needing everyone else’s acceptance but just of the ones you love. You're probably wondering why I looked for these in a half hour comedy, but there there and it makes the show so much more meaningful, you just need to read the right signs to understand the message written between the lines.
Near the end, one scene broke my heart, I can admit it. When you watch it on Tuesday and if you don’t feel the same I ask you, are you a Man or a Muppet? (I hope you get this reference).
I can’t express how much I loved and enjoyed it, I hope you do to. It feels like going back in time to when I was younger, watching the muppets on TV, only now, it’s in High Definition. It’s definitely the show for “the lovers, the dreamers and me…” and the perfect addition to ABC’s already excellent comedy lineup (Fresh Off The Boat, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family and Black-ish.) Thank you so much for reading.
Watch The Muppets live on Tuesday Sept 22 at 8|7c on ABC. “God bless America and its magnificent broadcasting company!”
