It’s no secret that when an actor takes on a major role with the likes of Marvel Studios that they sign an extensive contract for the foreseeable future. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man himself Tom Holland was asked about his deal for playing the wall crawler and replied:
“They give you options, and those could be exercised whenever. Like a cameo in Avengers. I’m unclear as to which movies, though. I do know I have three Spider-Man movies and three solo movies contracted. But if you have another movie, Marvel is so good at working around it. They’re very respectful of your life, really. They understand that you have to work on other movies, and they try and fix it up so you can work around each other.”
It’s unclear what Holland means by “three solo movies.” It could entail appearances in movies starring other Marvel heroes or it could mean appearances in group films like Avengers: Infinity War. We’ve reached out to Sony Pictures for clarification on the matter and will update.

With Robert Downey Jr. already set to reprise his role of Tony Stark, Sony and Marvel are looking to add a familiar face from his “Iron Man” universe into their new “Spider-Man” realm.
Jon Favreau will reprise his role of Happy, Stark’s personal driver in the “Iron Man” movies, in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” sources tell Variety.
Marvel and Sony had no comment on the news.

Zendaya will be playing long-time Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson in next summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” two individuals with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Diehard Spidey fans have long speculated about whom the 19-year-old Disney Channel star would portray in Sony’s high-profile reboot of the superhero franchise, starring British actor Tom Holland as a teenage Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man.
Sony declined to comment. Representatives for Marvel and Zendaya did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Chernus will play Phineas Mason the Tinkerer in the film which is being directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland in the lead role. According to the filmmaker, Zendaya plays Michelle, Revolori plays Flash, Harrier plays Liz, and Batalon plays Ned. “We constantly refer to ourselves as The Breakfast Club,” Harrier says of their relationship.
“I’m [Peter Parker’s] bully and I don’t know how cool he is, but when we call cut, I’m just like, ‘Ah! You’re so cool,’” Revolori recalls of working with Tom Holland, who plays the title character.

Tony Revolori, who has recently appeared in The 5th Wave and Dope, and starred in The Grand Budapest Hotel as the lovable Zero, was already confirmed as appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but his role was unknown. At the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC, however, Revolori's character was confirmed in the footage shown.
The footage was an entire scene, set at Midtown High, where Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, attends school. Other previously confirmed castmates Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, and Zendaya also appeared in the trailer. In the scene, we saw a typical day of high school for Peter, as he went from class to class, ate lunch in the cafeteria, and dealt with the problems of being a high schooler who is also a superhero.
In his science class, Peter is goofing off, watching a video on youtube of Spider-Man teaming up with Iron Man and War Machine to take down Giant Man at the airport in Germany, as seen in Captain America: Civil War. The teacher calls first on Flash Thompson to answer a question - and that's when Revolori speaks up. Yes, he's Flash, a traditionally (in the comics) white character whose only real defining characteristic is that he's a jerk/bully to Peter, yet ironically idolizes Spider-Man.

7th July 2016 - Angourie Rice Joins Cast
Angourie Rice, who recently had a breakout performance in buddy cop movie The Nice Guys opposite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, has been cast in Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Australian actress joins Tom Holland, who is starring as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a story that takes the character back to his high-school roots. (Holland made his first big-screen appearance as the web-slinger in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.)
Character details for Rice are being kept under wraps, as has been the case with many of the roles in the film, which is currently shooting in Atlanta. Marvel and Sony had no comment on Rice's casting.

EXCLUSIVE: Abraham Attah, the 15-year old Ghana-born actor who was discovered while playing soccer and made a remarkable screen debut alongside Idris Elba as the primary child soldier Abu in Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts Of No Nation, has joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Hannibal Buress is joining the cast of Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Tom Holland will play Peter Parker in the reboot with Marisa Tomei taking on Aunt May. Michael Keaton is also on board for the role of a villain. Other actors who have joined the cast over the last several weeks include Logan Marshall-Green, Donald Glover, Zendaya and Tony Revolori.

Logan Marshall-Green is in talks to join Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony’s reboot of its franchise on which it has partnered with Marvel Studios.
Keaton is playing the main bad guy in the movie and Marshall-Green would swing in as an evildoer alongside him.

EXCLUSIVE: Kenneth Choi who portrayed Judge Lance Ito in the popular FX series The People vs. O.J. Simpson has just been cast in Marvel/Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. That puts Choi in some rarified air playing two separate characters in the Marvel universe. He was also in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. Sources said he will be playing the school principal in Spider-Man.

20th May 2016 - Michael Keaton in Final Negotiations Again to Join Cast
Batman may be facing off against Spider-Man after all.
Back in April, Michael Keaton was in early talks to play the unnamed villain in Sony and Marvel’s upcoming movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, but those talks petered out, and it looked like Keaton wouldn’t be joining the Marvel family after all. Now, EW has confirmed that Keaton is back on board, and he’s in final negotiations to join the project.
Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, and there’s no word about which of Spider-Man’s nemeses Keaton may play, but if he joins Homecoming, he’ll star alongside Tom Holland, who made his debut as Spider-Man in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.

Robert Downey Jr., who plays the red-and-gold-armored Marvel character, has closed a deal to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel and Sony’s reboot of the web-crawling superhero, sources tell THR.
Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and is making his debut as the character in Civil War (and already garnering praise for his take on the role).
The movie establishes a key relationship between Tony Stark/Iron Man and Parker, and Homecoming will continue that thread.
as Michael Keaton, who was being courted to play the villain in the pic, has fallen out of early talks and won’t be a part of the project. That had been a juicy idea as it would have put the onetime Batman star in a Spidey movie, but we’re told this is not happening and the search continues to fill the role.

7th October 2015 - Did The Director Just Hint At Miles Morales Inclusion?
The director of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot has hinted to Yahoo Movies that Miles Morales – the mixed-race character who replaced Peter Parker as the webslinger in the comic books – may still be in the new movie.
“I can’t talk about that, because, you know, that will reveal too much,” he tells us. “We’re still writing the story…we haven’t finished all the way through the story yet, so who knows.”
No denial that Morales wasn’t part of the cast? Saying talking about it will “reveal too much”? Sounds like a yes (kind of) to us.

4th August 2015 - Rumor - To Adapt Kraven's Last Hunt
With Vacation writers John Francis Daly and Johnathan Goldstein officially hired to write the next Spider-Man standalone film for Marvel and Sony, development on the project is currently underway.
So who might the bad guy be in the film?
Well, my sources within Sony alerted me to something VERY interesting. Last week, Karen Moy, the Vice President of Creative Affairs over at Sony (Ms. Moy has run the story department at Sony for almost twenty years) purchased a copy of Kraven's Last Hunt trade paperback on Amazon.
At first I brushed it off and asked my sources why would she have to buy a copy? Wouldn't Marvel just send a copy over to the Sony story department for their research purposes? Well folks, you're not going to believe this, but Marvel is THAT insanely cheap. The Sony folks had to buy their own copy. Unbelievable.
But here is the kicker. I did some additional sleuthing and a quick search of Karen Moy on the leaked Sony emails database over on Wikileaks reveals that she has previously made book purchases on Amazon for her former boss Amy Pascal. In my experience, where there is smoke there is fire.
This can't be a coincidence. Why would the head of the story department buy a trade paperback about one of Spider-Man's greatest foes for anything OTHER than research purposes? It's safe to say Sony is looking into the possibility of Kraven as their bad guy.

30th June 2015 - Villain Hasn't Been In A Movie Before
But enough about the soap opera - we all know what’s going to sell a Spider-Man movie, and that’s the bad guy and the action. We’ve had five Spidey movies with eight villains, including three iterations of the Green Goblin/Hobgoblin. Is the next Spider-Man movie going to be bringing back familiar villains?
Feige says that Spidey has a deep bench of rogues. “That’s the advantage,” he told me. “Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before.”
So no Green Goblin this time around (although don’t be shocked if Harry and Norman Osborn show up). Could it finally be The Vulture’s time to shine? Or will there be a Kraven the Hunter or a Mysterio or a Molten Man in our cinematic future? I’d love to see Spider-Slayers, or maybe the Chameleon teaming up with a villain who offers more of a physical threat.

23rd June 2015 - Tom Holland announced as the new Spider-Man
Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of "Cop Car," the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in "The Impossible," “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming "In the Heart of the Sea," and by a series of complex screen tests. Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.
Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.
Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Today The Wrap's Jeff Sneider reported that the Spider-Man casting shortlist is down to Tom Holland, Matthew Lintz and Charlie Plummer. The site claims that the delay in casting comes down to Sony and Marvel butting heads over which kid is right.
My Sony sources were surprised by that bit of info. According to folks close to the situation there are no heads butting but rather everybody is exhibiting a lot of caution. This is major casting that they can't screw up, and they want the third time they cast Peter Parker to be the charm. It's been an agonizing process for this reason.
What's more, my sources tell me that the shortlist is actually two actors: Tom Holland and Charlie Rowe, whom The Wrap didn't name. 13th June 2015 - Asa Butterfield No Longer In The Running To Star
It sounds like one of the frontrunners for the role of Spider-Man is no longer under consideration to star in the MCU reboot.
TheWrap's film reporter Jeff Sneider appeared on the Meet the Movie Press podcast this week during which time he claimed that Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield -- once thought to be the contender to beat -- is not one of the three finalists for the title role.
Sneider said that he's been told the three contenders as of right now are Tom Holland (How I Live Now), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), and Matthew Lintz (Pixels). Sneider claims that Marvel's pick is Charlie Plummer, while Sony likes Tom Holland, meaning that Marvel and Sony are "at odds" over who should portray the web-slinger.

3rd June 2015 - Actor Shortlist Reduced To 2 + Director Shortlist Revealed
As Sony Pictures preps The Dark Tower (talks are starting with Nikolaj Arcel to direct) and the Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters as new franchises, and prepares to compete to re-up for the right to keep making James Bond movies when its deal expires after the upcoming Spectre (as our sister publication Variety uncovered), the studio is also getting close to untangling the web of intrigue over the next iteration of Spider-Man. It’s down to the wire, both on the choice of the actor who’ll play Peter Parker — Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are the frontrunners though Matt Lintz and Charlie Rowe also made strong impressions — and also on the filmmaker who’ll steer a multi-picture arc that takes the protagonist through high school.
After a long vetting process, Sony Pictures and Marvel are zeroed in on the favorites, St Vincent helmer Ted Melfi and Warm Bodies’ Jonathan Levine. Still in contention are John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the director-writers of the updated version of John Hughes’ Vacation.

31st May 2015 - Actors Who Had A Screen-Test Revealed
According to sources, six teenage boys tested for the highly sought-after role in Captain America: Civil War and follow-up films, one of the biggest "gets" for a young actor in the film business.
Tom Holland, who appeared as one of Naomi Watts' sons in the acclaimed tsunami drama The Impossible, and Asa Butterfield, the child star from Hugo and Ender's Game, were the best known of the contenders. The other four hopefuls included: Judah Lewis (a relative newbie who will be seen in the Jean Marc-Vallee's fall drama Demolition), Matthew Lintz (who will be seen with Adam Sandler in this summer's Pixels), Charlie Plummer (who had a recurring gig on Boardwalk Empire) and Charlie Rowe (a British actor who appeared on Fox's short-lived Red Band Society).

15th May 2015 - Asa Butterfield In Negotiations For Lead Role
We've been sitting on this information since Friday but can confirm now, that his reps and Marvel are under negotiations. Its all about formalities now and then an official announcement from Marvel will follow shortly.
We've known to be on the lookout for the many names on the various "short lists" that have come out over the past months as the potential Spider-Men have been whittled down to Butterfield.
Butterfield will presumably make his first appearance in Civil War next May followed by a solo Spider-Man movie with Sony and MCU characters on July 28th 2017. Rumors have Sony and Marvel planning to strike while the Spider-Man iron is hot beyond those two announced releases, but confirmable details are not available at this time.

We all know that the role needs to be cast soon since it has been confirmed that we will see Peter Parker in “Captain America: Civil War” in May 6, 2016 before he stars in the “Spider-Man" solo film slated forJuly 28, 2017.
So who is the front-runner? Asa Butterfield Leads the Bunch. We have reached out to Asa’s reps who have given us a “no comment.” We have also reached out other industry sources who have confirmed that he is indeed the front runner including one who believed that he already had bagged the role, by stating:

12th February 2015 - Dylan O'Brien And Logan Lerman Being Considered For Lead Role
Sony is looking to a few fresh faces to portray a much younger Spider-Man in their Marvel Studios-sanctioned new take on the character.
A few actors are already being considered to replace the Amazing Spider-Man series' Andrew Garfield, including Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner) and Logan Lerman (the Percy Jackson series, Fury). The studio has reportedly not yet reached out to them. A new director is also needed to replace The Amazing Spider-Man films' Marc Webb, and presumably this new helmer will participate in the casting of the film.
The new Peter Parker will go back to "Spidey’s roots and put the character back in high school," and the web-slinging superhero will now "spend more time in the setting and explore his awkward relationship with other students while fighting crime out of the classroom."

There are a couple of steps in production. They meant probably the preproduction, prepping the story, overall road they wanna go with this movie and possible follow ups etc etc.

ReplyDeletePREDICTION: depending on the trailers, reviews and what other Avengers are in the film, I think it could be the #1 spidey movie (in domestic and worldwide Box Office), beating Spider-Man's (2002) 403mil domestic (and also doubling TASM2's 203mil), and beating Spider-Man 3's 890mil worldwide.

ReplyDeleteI believe that is meant to be the idea. He's meant to already have his powers but still be early in his career. So when the movie picks up, he's probably had his powers for maybe...6 months roughly? In that time he's probably met a couple of his villains already.

ReplyDeleteHe originally became Spiderman when he was 15 years old in the comics. It make sense that in any origin story, he would be a teen. That being said -- I am pretty sure he was late 20s when he joined the Avengers in the comics, so the title confuses me.

ReplyDeleteNo this one is completely new and unrelated to the Andrew Garfield stuff. However they are apparently skipping his origin entirely. By the time we see him in the solo Spider-Man movie he is already meant to have his powers and be early in his career. It's unknown if he'll have his powers in Civil War already.

ReplyDeleteIt's just personal preference. I like Ben Affleck as a person and can watch him do live interviews, fundraisers, talk shows etc...but I do not like him as an actor. The only two roles I have been able to get through an entire movie with him were Good Will Hunting and Armageddon.
ReplyDeleteAs for Holland, I've never seen him act so I can't judge but from his roles, going by reviews on his performance in Wolf Hall, he must be a fantastic actor. He just looks 12 to me, not 19 and he is small. That is not a bash against him, just not what I see when I think of Spiderman.
As for Spiderman himself, he has always been my least favorite comic character. I haven't seen any of the last few movies and doubt I'll see this one. I don't have plans to see Batman Vs Superman either but I do plan to see Suicide Squad.
SN- Ryan Reynolds is another one that I don't like so I doubt I'll go see Deadpool.

ReplyDeleteHe was fantastic in Argo, Gone Girl and The Town and he seems to be quite committed to the role so I gotta give him some serious benefit. It's actually Batman V. Superman (fittingly the whole V means and, because it's also a team up movie). Reynolds will be terrific as Deadpool of that I have no doubt.

ReplyDeleteThat's where the preference comes in. I heard such great things about Gone Girl but I couldn't even get through the movie watching him. I skipped to the end to watch the last half hour everyone was talking about. I'm sure he'll do great for BvS and the movie will do great at the box office. Also agree on Deadpool. I'm sure Reynolds and the movie will do great and I hope they do. I love when my comics do well on TV and the Box Office even when they're not favorites. I root for them. These few are just not for me.

ReplyDeleteEh, in the ultimate comics, Aunt May is only in her very late 40's at the start. It actually ended up being one of the better versions of Aunt May.

ReplyDeleteThey purposely made Aunt May younger in the 1610 universe (Ultimate) so she could be the 'cool' aunt. It also allowed Aunt May to get more involved in stuff (because she was younger she could actually go out and do things, rather then always looking like she could die at any second).
In the ultimate universe, aunt May was a teenager in the 1960's. The 'present day story' takes place in the early 2000's. Putting her at late 40's (at most, very early 50's).
But they're not doing the ultimate universe, are they? No. they're doing Spectacular, so she'd be slightly younger, but she'd still be old. Either way, i STILL don't like it. And i'm extremely turned off by this casting in particular.
ReplyDeleteMuch of the MCU has been based on the Ultimate universe despite the names used. The same thing is being done here. Spider-Man is being based on the Ultimate Universe version (Peter is younger at 15 instead of 17 like in the regular universe, Aunt May is in her late 40's rather then 60's, ect).

- Pretty much everything to do with the MCU Hawkeye and Nick Fury is from Ultimate (costume, family, ties to SHIELD, ect)
- The Chitauri and Loki are what brings the Avengers/Ultimates together
