Empire - Episode 1.03 - The Devil Quotes Scripture

1x03 - "The Devil Quotes Scripture" (21-Jan-2015)

When Kidd Fo-Fo signs with rival label Creedmore, Lucious wants to hit back at the label and makes an offer to Creedmore’s Harry Jackson to head A&R for him. Meanwhile, Detective Walker tells Lucious that he has a lead on a possible eyewitness to Bunkie’s murder. Anika reveals to Lucious that she hired a private investigator to tail Cookie and that she is likely working with federal agents. When Cookie learns of the tip, Agent Carter poses as Cookie’s parole officer to throw Lucious off the trail. At Bunkie’s funeral in Philadelphia, Lucious delivers a heartfelt eulogy and has Gladys Knight sing. Still trying to push Jamal’s career, Cookie seeks out Puma, a now-retired songwriter who wrote some hits for Empire, to pen a song for him. She finds Puma running a rehabilitation center for troubled teens, and he gives her an old demo of a song he originally wrote about her. Lucious throws an elaborate dinner for Hakeem and his new girlfriend Tiana, which Cookie insists on inviting Jamal and his boyfriend Michael to. At the party, Jamal plays his version of Puma’s song and everyone loves it - but Lucious publicly tells him he’ll never record it, and Jamal bitterly storms out. Harry Jackson arrives to tell Lucious he’s not interested in the job offer, and is poaching Empire’s star Veronica for Creedmore. Afterward, Hakeem beds down not with Tiana but with Camilla, a woman he has secretly been carrying on an affair with. Elsewhere, Detective Walker questions the homeless man who may have witnessed Bunkie’s murder... by showing a picture of potential suspect Lucious Lyon. Late that night, Lucious confronts Jamal at his loft, and Jamal announces he doesn’t want to be helped anymore, handing over the apartment keys. In the street afterward, Jamal vows to Michael that he’s going after his dad’s empire.
