Z Nation - Resurrection Z - Review
I can't believe I am going to say this, but I really enjoyed the episode. In what was a nice blend of humor, action and romance, Resurrection Z was one of the best episodes to date for this show. It also supplies us with a shocking ending that I really couldn't have imagined.
This episode our group is in dire need of some food, as they haven't eaten in a couple of days. Luckily for them Garnett has a friend Major Williams nearby at a compound. As usual they end up in a compromising situation when a priest and his followers break through the so-called "tight defenses". A little back-story on the priest. He was part of the community which Major Williams runs, but started preaching to others about the zombies, being gifts from god. He then managed to gain a dedicated following that came with him to his church. During this episode he sends 3 of his followers back into the secure compound, they act as if they wanted to re-join the community, and were fed up with the priest's vision. What I didn't get is why they bothered to let them back in, you could tell from the way they were looking that they didn't want to re-join any group. If they left the group to join a mad man, I wouldn't have let them back in.
Roberta and Garnett this episode seemed to be all over each other, which was strange as they didn't seem all that affectionate in previous episodes. This episode they were trying to have sex, on a tiny bed which was highly amusing to watch, especially how Roberta thought she could make everything romantic, by even lighting some candles. They even got in a "I love you" at one point, which although was cute I found it to be a bit rushed, as just last episode she was searching for her beloved husband. She must move on quick. We also had Murphy who continued down his own path, trying to figure out what he is. He knows there is something wrong with him since the zombies won't attack him. I really thought though that this episode he would turn. It did look like he might have turned though, but somehow is remaining human, by keeping the human part of his brain perhaps?.
The reason I say this is his skin colour was really grey like a zombie would be. I do hope he doesn't turn as without Murphy on the show I am not sure if I would keep watching. After the group eventually regroups in a corridor they find themselves trapped with no way out. They couldn't go back as more people were pushing and shoving trying to get out the door which was clearly locked. It was a very intense scene, especially when the zombies were biting into people one by one getting closer to our group. Addy also had another one of her strange flashbacks that looked like it involved zombies. I hope we find out soon what the flashbacks are of, as the anticipation of not knowing what is going on with her is killing me.
The group managed to get outside thanks to 10k, who always seems to disappear and reappear at the right moments; he is like their guardian angel. The group get captured by Jacob's followers a minute later and taken to him to answer for their blasphemy. 10k managed to escape again. Right behind the group is a cage full of zombies, which is when Murphy reappears to save Garnett who was about to get his throat cut. He delivers one of the greatest speeches on the show, about how he was bit and how he is the messiah. Take note Citizen Z that is how a speech is done.
Before long Jacob pulls out a gun and wants to see if Murphy is immune to a bullet. I have to say the villains on the show have been excellent, they all have provided us with an engaging story behind them. None of them have feared death; the ambition they each have shown towards achieving their goal is quite admirable. I hope in future episodes we see some more villainous characters. After Jacob pulls the trigger it was like a scramble, everyone pushing each other out the way, it wasn't long before Garnett played the hero and jumped in front of Murphy to take the bullet. I was very surprised he would be the one to die; I thought after the killing of Major Hammond, that Garnett would remain the leader until the mission had been completed. I guess I was wrong.
I don't know how they will go forward with this now, after killing of such an important character, if I had to pick someone to die it would've been Cassandra (I have nothing against her). Her story was about the cannibals has now ended, and she doesn't do/say much. Garnett, on the other hand, just started a relationship with Warren which they could have explored further. Anyway maybe we can see in the next episode what effect his death will have on the group. Right at the end Warren gave him mercy, by shooting him in the head with a sniper. I thought that was a nice touch.
Summary
Another good episode, one of the best we have had. It was filled with action sequences, fun witty dialogue and a short-lived romance. My only problem with the episode was the killing of Garnett, he was a very important character in the story, and I feel with him there were many potential story lines that could have been explored. I think it was a bad decision to kill him off.
As always , thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!
