George Blagden will play Louis XIV in Canal+'s new historical drama series, Versailles, currently a week into filming its 10-episode first season in France for the next six months and eyeing a 2015 Fall première.
George Blagden is best known for playing Athelstan in Vikings seasons 1 & 2 as well as playing Grantaire in Les Misérables. He is fluent in French.
His co-stars will include Welsh actor Alexander Vlahos (Merlin), and French actresses Amira Casar (La vérité si je mens! trilogy) and Dominique Blanc (Indochine, La Reine Margot).
- Alexander Vlahos will play Louis's younger brother, an openly gay warrior nicknamed Monsieur.
- Amira Casar will play Béatrice.
- Dominique Blanc will play Anne of Austria.

Among the supporting cast, there will be:
- Lizzie Brochéré (American Horror Story: Asylum, season 3 of Canal+'s Braquo).
- Peter Hudson (Canal+'s Pigalle la nuit, Canal+'s Kaboul Kitchen).
- Elisa Lasowski (Game of Thrones).
- Noémie Schmidt (Toi que j'aimais tant).
- Anatole Taubman (The Pillars of the Earth, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky).
- Maddison Jaizani (Tyrant - she will play a character named Sophie).
- Anna Brewster (The Tudors, Silent Witness).
- Gilly Gilchrist (Lip Service).
- Tygh Runyan (Stargate Universe).
They join Sarah Winter, a supporting player already announced as part of the series.
The cinematographer is Pierre-Yves Bastard (Canal+'s Maison Close seasons 1 & 2, Inquisitio, JCVD, Le vilain).
The costume designer is Madeline Fontaine (the two-part adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's Jean de Florette / Manon des sources, all of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films (except Alien Resurrection), Séraphine, Poulet aux prunes, Camille Redouble, Yves Saint Laurent).
