(Check out my website, www.seriesmonitor.com)
A week ago I posted a table which showed the first quarter results of 7 of the shows I follow on my website. Now that we have moved a week further through the new season, I can put another few shows and their results on the table as well
Again, the way this works is pretty simple, you take all the ratings, add them together to make a larger number, then divide it by 6 to get an average rating across the first 6 episodes. This same method works for calculating the average audience
Each show in the table below has the ratings and audience highs and lows, along with the ratings and audience average. Note that shows that aired last season have the numbers from last season's first 6 episodes listed in brackets. Also bear in mind that a couple of shows have aired more than six episodes, but only the first six are counted in this table. For running analysis of these shows, that data can be found on my website, www.seriesmonitor.com, under the Season Break down section of each show
Like the table last week, where the biggest margin exists between a show's results from last season and this season in a category, the box is colored orange. If there is a gain in results on last season, the box is colored green, if it's white it means there is a loss on last season.
Note that FOX's Bones had a shortened season last season, so it's first quarter for comparison to this season is just 3 episodes, instead of the usual six. It's ratings dropped dramatically over the course of a cut up last season, as the Season 7 graphs here demonstrates
Show | Ratings high | Ratings low | Ratings average | Audience high | Audience low | Audience average |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Castle | 2.2 (3.2) | 1.9 (2.1) | 2.05 (2.63) | 10.94 (13.28) | 10.02 (10.23) | 10.55 (11.38) |
Revolution | 4.1 | 3.0 | 3.33 | 11.65 | 7.90 | 8.95 |
T.B.B.T. | 5.2 (5.1) | 4.5 (4.4) | 4.90 (4.82) | 15.90 (14.94) | 14.23 (13.26) | 15.42 (14.35) |
Modern Family | 5.5 (6.1) | 4.2 (5.7) | 4.83 (5.87) | 14.44 (14.53) | 10.62 (13.04) | 12.38 (13.74) |
O.U.a.T. | 3.9 (4.0) | 3.0 (3.2) | 3.42 (3.68) | 11.36 (12.94) | 9.45 (9.66) | 10.09 (11.31) |
Revenge | 3.2 (3.3) | 2.6 (2.4) | 2.77 (2.72) | 9.74 (10.02) | 7.94 (7.68) | 8.54 (8.47) |
The Mentalist | 2.1 (3.1) | 1.5 (2.5) | 1.82 (2.60) | 11.06 (13.56) | 8.10 (12.39) | 9.70 (12.83) |
P.O.I. | 3.0 (3.1) | 2.8 (2.6) | 2.90 (2.77) | 14.87 (13.33) | 13.66 (11.57) | 14.23 (12.25) |
NCIS | 4.1 (4.3) | 3.1 (3.9) | 3.48 (4.12) | 20.48 (19.96) | 17.05 (18.98) | 18.59 (19.44) |
Bones | 2.3 (3.3) | 1.9 (2.6) | 2.10 (2.87) | 7.98 (10.00) | 6.96 (8.64) | 7.34 (9.13) |
Criminal Minds | 3.1 (4.1) | 2.9 (3.6) | 3.03 (3.82) | 12.09 (14.14) | 11.49 (12.58) | 11.79 (13.19) |
It's interesting to note that Castle, The Mentalist, Bones, and Criminal Minds, all share the same highest ratings differential of 1.0 across the two seasons analyzed. As a result, they all get orange boxes
Shows that are doing very well in comparison to last season are quite obvious, with The Big Bang Theory, Revenge, and Person of Interest the standouts. NCIS also pulled a larger audience high compared to last season, but has suffered elsewhere. Criminal Minds, NCIS, and The Mentalist in particular are experiencing large drops, with the lines on the Season Comparison graphs on my website tunneling under those of previous seasons
Freshman shows Last Resort, The Mob Doctor, and 666 Park Avenue will remain absent until the fate of the remainder of their seasons is determined, because this impacts on the length of the first quarter of episodes. Grey's Anatomy and Glee each air their sixth episodes tomorrow, and I plan to update the table then. Their results will all be negative at this stage, according to the season breakdowns of each show on my website. Scandal had a very short 7 episode first season, and as a result it won't be included on this table
Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, Bones, Criminal Minds, NCIS, and Castle all have additional seasons beyond the last season that is shown in the table. To see these seasons, go to my website, www.seriesmonitor.com, click on the show you're interested in, then to the Statistics section, where you'll see the Season Breakdown button. There you will find complete quarterly breakdowns of the previous seasons that have aired, along with graphs and the information for the lead-in shows. I'm not going to copy and paste it all here when it's already available on my site! For Once Upon A Time, Person of Interest, and Revenge, there is also further analysis on the data shown in the table on their respective Season Breakdown pages
