Sam Huntington and Kristen Hager | (Being Human) |
Tonight was Syfy’s first night of a two day Digital Press Tour in Toronto. Thanks to the Syfy network for a wonderful night! We were treated to cocktails and a lovely dinner at the trendy C5 restaurant in downtown Toronto. We were joined by most of the cast from Being Human – Sam Witwer, Meaghan Rath, Sam Huntington, and Kristen Hager – and Eric Balfour, Lucas Bryant and Edge from Haven. And as a surprise bonus, we were also joined by Jesse Rath of Defiance.
The cocktail portion of the evening was a bit problematic for getting anyone’s attention, but all the cast members were warm and friendly and were happy to pose for pictures with everyone. Because this is a fairly substantial tour, the room was quite crowded, which made asking questions a bit challenging. As it turned out, I wasn’t able to get much time with the Haven cast members. I did managed to ride down in the elevator with Eric Balfour and Edge at the end of the evening, however. He mentioned that this season the action is going to be pretty intense and follow a pretty serious storyline, which means he’ll be spending a little more time with his clothes on this season, but they mentioned Edge would be taking his shirt off. Eric was a good sport when I asked the question for a fan, but he is also clearly a thoughtful and dedicated actor, and both were excited about where the series is going this season.

Dinner provided an opportunity for more conversation. I was able to ask Sam Huntington about how the change in showrunners might have affected the show. Jeremy Carver, of course, has gone back to Supernatural to be showrunner. While Sam expressed obvious regret in having lost Carver, he said that it had actually streamlined the show’s production. Even though Anna Fricke and Jeremy Carver are married, it was still tough to actually get both of them on the phone at one time. Now when an issue arises, they are able to talk with Fricke and resolve them quickly. Huntington was quick to say that this doesn’t mean they’re always calling to complain, just that the atmosphere is a collaborative one. Meaghan Rath also commented on how much the creative team included the actors, welcoming their insights and input. Everyone cares about making the show the best it can be.
Speaking of Meaghan Rath, I had the very good fortune to be seated next to her at dinner. She was absolutely lovely- sweet and drop dead gorgeous. She wasn’t able to tell me much at all about where her character is going in season 3. Both Sams had been given the greenlight to mention what was next for their characters, but Meaghan was told she could say virtually nothing, and in fact, her handler was paying very close attention to what she said!!
How ironic is it that Meaghan is fascinated by ghost stories and we spent a good part of the evening swapping ghost stories. Both Huntington and Rath were really excited with where the season is going. It’s going to turn the mythology on its head according to both actors. Rath also mentioned that the first episode is action-packed and is sure to be a favorite with fans.
Also joining us at dinner was Meaghan’s real life brother, Jessie Rath who is going to be starring in the new Syfy series Defiance. He is just as lovely as Meaghan - a definite family resemblance both inside and out. He’s very much enjoying life on the Defiance set. It is very much a huge ensemble piece so he may work several days in a row and then have several days completely off. He also shared that he spends two hours each day having his makeup done – including some lovely blue hair and “fairy dust” so that he sparkles! He also described the work that’s gone into creating the alien languages – and we’ll be hearing more about that tomorrow. According to Jesse, the cast has already formed a tight-knit group.
Tomorrow we will visit the sets of Defiance and Warehouse 13. We’ll have a chance to meet cast and production, so send me your questions!! If our itinerary is any indication, we’ve got a busy and exciting day ahead of us. Can’t wait to tell you all about Defiance – or at least as much as they’ll let me...
