Opposite an evening of all repeats on CBS, Fox led this first Thursday of December in the metered markets with a 1.1 rating point advantage over the Eye net. Third overall was ABC, which featured two-hour special CMA Country Christmas, followed by NBC and lowly The CW.
The X Factor, which is down to only five finalists, opened with a 7.3 rating/12 share, which dominated the 8 p.m. hour overall. Next was always reliable Bones with an also first-place 6.6/10 at 9 p.m. Compared to year-ago time period occupant Fringe (3.8/ 6 on 12/3/10), Bones built by a hefty 74 percent. Effective on Jan. 19, Fox’s line-up on Thursday will consistent of returning American Idol and upcoming Bones spin-off The Finder. For more on Fox in midseason, see next section.
Despite airing a repeat, The Big Bang Theory still led the 8 p.m. half-hour with a 7.1/12. Next was a repeat Rules of Engagement (#2: 5.3/ 9 at 8:30 p.m.), which steps down on Jan. 5 to make room for upcoming Rob Schneider sitcom Rob!, followed by encore telecasts of Person of Interest (#3: 5.7/ 9) and The Mentalist (#2: 5.5/ 9) from 9-11 p.m.
Over at ABC, a repeat of annual special Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town finished third at 8 p.m. with a 4.5/ 7, which built year-to-year by seven percent (4.2/ 7 on 12/3/10). Next was aforementioned two-hour special CMA Country Christmas at a 6.0/10 from 9-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
CMA Country Christmas (ABC)
9:00 p.m.: 6.4/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 6.2/10 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 5.9/10 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 5.5/10 (#1)
Given the expected respectable sized audience for CMA Country Christmas, consider this a “winner.”
Elsewhere, original telecasts of NBC’s Community (#4: 2.7/ 4), Parks and Recreation (#4: 2.8/ 5), The Office (#4: 4.0/ 6), Whitney (#4: 3.0/ 5) and canceled Prime Suspect (#3: 3.7/ 6) kept the network buried in the distant No. 4 spot. But overnight growth of 43 percent for The Office out of Parks and Recreation is still a positive worth noting. And The CW capped off the night with encore telecasts of The Vampire Diaries (#5: 0.9/ 2) and The Secret Circle (#5: 0.8/ 1). As a reminder, NBC’s Thursday line-up effective on January 12 will consist of the following:
